Chinese arrivals in Brunei rise as Shenzhen Airlines adds direct flights

Brunei Darussalam recorded about 39,000 tourist arrivals by air from China in 2024. The figure rose to 45,858 in 2025, an increase of 17.6%.

The country also recorded 28,657 air arrivals from China as of August 2026.

Hajah Nur Fariza Munyati Haji Abd Aji, acting deputy director of the Tourism Development Department at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, shared the figures in her welcoming remarks at a ceremony marking Shenzhen Airlines' new service between Shenzhen and Bandar Seri Begawan.

She said China remains an important tourism market for Brunei Darussalam, with the latest annual figures showing growth in visitor arrivals.

The increase from 2024 to 2025 reflects closer travel ties, improved air connectivity and the continued appeal of Brunei's cultural and ecotourism attractions, she said.

Hajah Nur Fariza said direct flights, together with visa-free entry of up to 14 days for eligible Chinese ordinary passport holders, make Brunei an accessible destination for short breaks and holidays.

She said this offers an opportunity to attract more visitors, particularly from Shenzhen and other parts of southern China, through tailored travel packages and experiences.

Her comments followed the launch of Shenzhen Airlines' nonstop service between Shenzhen and Bandar Seri Begawan. The service will initially operate four times a week, strengthening links between the two destinations and offering travelers a more convenient way to visit Brunei.

Hajah Nur Fariza welcomed Shenzhen Airlines and the passengers on its inaugural flight.

She said the benefits of direct air connectivity extend beyond the flight itself, as visitors can support Brunei's hotels, restaurants, tour operators, guides and transport providers.

The route also creates opportunities for business travel and closer people-to-people exchanges. Working with Shenzhen Airlines and tourism partners, the Tourism Development Department hopes to develop attractive itineraries that encourage visitors to explore more of Brunei and stay longer.

The launch comes as Brunei prepares for Visit Brunei Year 2027. The campaign will coincide with the Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years since His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam ascended the throne.

Throughout the year, visitors will be invited to explore Brunei's culture, nature and adventure attractions, from the heritage of Kampong Ayer to the rainforests of Temburong.

Hajah Nur Fariza said the new air link will make it easier for visitors from China to experience these attractions.

She thanked Shenzhen Airlines, the aviation authorities and all partners who helped make the inaugural flight possible. She added that Brunei looks forward to working with them to promote the route, expand opportunities for tourism and business travel, and welcome more visitors from China.

Among those attending were Yang Mulia Puan Dk Hajah Mazlizah binti Pengiran Haji Mahalee, acting permanent secretary (industry) at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; and His Excellency Chen Shaochun, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam. Representatives of Shenzhen Airlines, colleagues, industry partners and members of the media also attended.
