A spokesperson for the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said on Thursday that the HKSAR government's efforts to investigate the major fire at the residential complex Wang Fuk Court demonstrated a serious and fact-based approach to accountability in accordance with the law, demonstrating responsible administration.
The HKSAR government on Thursday released a report on the investigation into the incident, announcing accountability measures and follow-up reforms.
Following the fire, HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee and the HKSAR government firmly fulfilled their roles, the spokesperson noted. "Guided by a people-centered governance philosophy, they led various departments to work in close coordination to carry out disaster relief and emergency response operations, provide medical treatment to the injured, and extend aid to those affected, earning the recognition of the public and various sectors of society," said the spokesperson.
The HKSAR government promptly established an independent committee to conduct a comprehensive review of the incident, said the spokesperson, noting that following an investigation spanning more than seven months – which included 30 hearings, the summoning of 80 factual and expert witnesses, and the collection of over one million documents – the committee produced an objective and impartial report.
