The expansion project of Haikou Meilan International Airport went into operation Thursday.

It includes a 3,600-meter-long and 60-meter-wide runway, which can handle the Airbus A380, so far the world's largest passenger airliner.

Covering 300,000 square meters, the new T2 Terminal has 110 check-in counters and a considerable number of duty-free shops.

With lots of green plants in the terminal, it offers tourists a experience of walking in a tropics-style commercial areas.

The airport is expected to handle a passenger throughput of 35 million and a cargo throughput of 400,000 tons annually in 2025.
