China urges US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other US politicians to respect facts and stop incessant anti-China rhetoric, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday during a routine press briefing, in response to Pompeo’s allegation that an increasing number of countries stand up for the world views of the US.

Many surveys suggested that the US has been suffering from an eroding image because the country’s foreign policy is on a wrong track, and most say the US has handled the coronavirus outbreak badly, said Wang Wenbin, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that the international community has awakened to recognize the threat China has posed, during a virtual conference hosted by the Atlantic Council on Tuesday, adding that “the tide has turned” as many allies are beginning to reconsider their reliance on Beijing.

“Pompeo has long been ignoring facts and smearing China by fabricating lies on every occasion, and the global community sees his true colors very clearly,” said Wang.

“Contrary to what he said about more and more countries supporting the world view advocated by the US, many surveys suggest that the country’s flawed foreign policy has resulted in its national image lurching from bad to worse.”

A recent report from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) said that “Europeans’ trust in Trump's America is gone,” as many of them have been appalled by the country’s chaotic response to COVID-19.

US News and World Report showed that global confidence in the US has tumbled to a record low, dropping by more than 50 percent since 2016, “the sharpest drop of any country,” according to its 2020 Best Countries report.

According to Gallup’s annual survey, US leadership continues to suffer around the world, with the least support among the country’s closest allies in Europe.

Pew Research Center found that across the 37 countries it has tracked over the past several years, only 20 percent trust Trump’s approach to international affairs. According to another report published by the center on Tuesday, countries including the UK, France, Germany, Japan and Korea have seen a steep decline in favorable views of the US as many disapprove of Washington’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Wang reiterated, “We urge Pompeo and other US politicians to respect facts and stop their incessant anti-China rhetoric, which will only to it being shunned by the Chinese people and those in the international community.”
