Freezing fog strands over 9,000 at Urumqi airport

URUMQI, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- More than 9,000 people were stranded Friday due to freezing fog at the Urumqi Diwopu International Airport in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to the airport.

Over 80 outbound flights and 75 inbound flights were canceled and a further 62 delayed in the airport due to the freezing fog that started at 4 a.m. Friday.

The airport has issued a red alert for the delay.
