China's first Type 055 destroyer Nanchang commissioned
The Nanchang, China's first Type 055 guided-missile destroyer, was commissioned in the People's Liberation Army Navy on Sunday morning in the port city of Qingdao, East China's Shandong Province.
The 10,000 ton-class destroyer officially debuted at the multinational naval parade in celebration of the Chinese navy's 70th founding anniversary on April 23, 2019.
Launched on June 28, 2017, the destroyer is equipped with new air defense, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons, said a statement from the Navy. (Xinhua)
UK ambassador arrested in Tehran amid protests over plane downing
Britain’s ambassador to Iran has been arrested during protests outside a university in the capital city Tehran, according to the Guardian.
Robert Macaire was detained for more than an hour before being released, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported.
Foreign secretary Dominic Raab said, “The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran without grounds or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law, the Guardian reported. (People's Daily app)
Canadian province retracts warning of nuclear power incident
The Canadian province of Ontario sent an alert reporting an unspecified "incident" at a nuclear plant just east of Toronto on Sunday — only to later report the message was sent in error.
The initial emergency message sent to cellphones of people throughout the province said the incident had occurred at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, though it added there had been no abnormal release of radioactivity from the station and said people didn't need to take protective action.
More than an hour later, Ontario Power Generation later sent a message saying the alert "was sent in error. There is no danger to the public or environment." (China Plus)
Volcano erupts near Manila; airport shut, villagers flee
A small volcano near the Philippine capital erupted with a massive plume of ash and steam Sunday, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and forcing Manila's international airport to shut down.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Taal Volcano in Batangas province south of Manila blasted steam, ash and pebbles up to 10 to 15 kilometers into the sky in a dramatic escalation of its growing restiveness, which began last year.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, but authorities scrambled to evacuate more than 6,000 villagers from an island in the middle of a lake. (AP)
Queen prepares for royal family summit over Harry and Meghan
Ensconced with aides at her royal retreat, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II prepared Sunday for a crisis family meeting to work out a future for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, after their dramatic decision to walk away from royal roles.
Royal officials said the queen had summoned her grandson Harry, his elder brother Prince William and their father Prince Charles to Sandringham, 160 kilometers north of London, for a meeting on Monday.
The summit reflects the queen’s desire to contain the fallout from Harry and Meghan’s decision to “step back” as senior royals, work to become financially independent and split their time between Britain and North America.
The couple, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, made the announcement Wednesday without telling the queen or other senior royals first. (AP)
Rockets hit northern Baghdad where US troops are based
Eight rockets hit an Iraqi airbase in northern Baghdad where US troops are based. According to AFP, four Iraqis were wounded. The majority of US airmen had already left before the attack.
Statement from the Iraqi military said eight Katyusha-type rockets landed on Al-Balad airbase, wounding two Iraqi officers and two airmen.
Al-Balad is the main airbase for Iraq's F-16s, which it bought from the US to upgrade its air capacities. (AFP)
Djokovic defeats Nadal, leads Serbia to ATP Cup victory
Serbia defeated Spain to claim the inaugural ATP Cup in Australia on Sunday, with the matchup between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal a turning point in the 2-1 result.
It all came down to the doubles decider, and despite a spirited performance and early lead by the Spanish, Serbia surged to the victory, 6-3, 6-4, in the final clash. (Xinhua)
