Chang'e-4 to measure lunar temperatures during freezing night

The night on the moon is dark and cold, yet Chinese scientists don't know exactly how cold it can be. The Chang'e-4 probe, which made the first-ever soft-landing on the far side of the moon, will help them measure the moon's temperatures.

Temperatures vary enormously between day and night on the moon. Scientists estimate that the highest temperature during the day might reach 127 degrees Celsius, while the lowest at night could fall to minus 183 degrees Celsius.

The lander is equipped with dozens of temperature data collectors, and the data they collect at night will be transmitted after the probe is wakened during the moon's daytime, said Li Fei, a designer of the lander from the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST). (Xinhua)

China to maintain stable employment in 2019

China will roll out a series of measures to maintain stable employment in 2019, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS).

China will reduce enterprises’ burden to ensure employment, officials with the MHRSS told a joint media interview, noting that research on plans for cutting enterprises' social insurance premium rate will be accelerated.

Targeted job projects and plans should be applied to assist college graduates, migrant rural workers and veterans in finding jobs, according to the official.

The MHRSS also said more channels should be opened to offer various skills training for the unemployed, and the salary payment of migrant rural workers should be guaranteed, the official added. (Xinhua)

Trump rules out emergency option

US President Donald Trump said he was holding off on declaring a state of emergency to end the partial US government shutdown that dragged into a 23rd day Sunday, as he insisted on $5.7 billion to build a Mexico border wall that congressional Democrats oppose.

Asked by Fox News why he didn't immediately declare a national emergency to secure the funds without congressional approval, Trump said he wanted to give opposition Democratic lawmakers more time to strike a deal.

Trump fired off a series of tweets Saturday defending his stance and goad Democrats to return to Washington and end what he called "the massive humanitarian crisis at our Southern Border." (AFP)

Greek defense minister quits over Macedonia name deal, six others may follow

Greece's right-wing defense minister resigned Sunday in protest over a deal ending a long-running name agreement with Macedonia, with six other ministers from his party possibly to follow.

Panos Kammenos, whose Independent Greeks party helped build the government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, has long opposed the accord with neighboring Macedonia signed by their governments last year.

Kammenos had announced that any deal including "Macedonia" in the name of the Balkan state to Greece's north was unacceptable as the name was irrevocably tied to Greek civilization and culture. (CGTN)

The Jack Ma Rural Teacher Award ceremony was held in Sanya, South China's Hainan Province, on Sunday.

At the award ceremony, plans for the rural boarding school model rooms Ma advocates will be released. Ma has awarded this prize to rural teachers every year in Sanya since 2015.

Meanwhile, China has made significant progress in building its ranks of teachers in rural areas, according to a report on the country's rural education released Sunday.

Issued by the research institute on rural education at the Northeast Normal University, the report was based on local statistics from 19 provinces and national statistical data.

The report showed that 95.26 percent of primary school teachers had junior college degrees or above nationwide in 2017, while that for rural areas stood at 93.80 percent; 84.63 percent of junior high school teachers nationwide had bachelor degree or above in 2017, while that for rural areas was 81.10 percent. The figures showed narrowing gap between urban and rural areas, the report said. (Xinhua-China Daily)

Chinese become second largest tourist force in Antarctica

Antarctica received 8,273 Chinese travelers from 2017 to 2018, accounting for 16 percent of the total number of visitors, which is only second to the United States, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) reported.

The number is nearly 3,000 more than that of the 2016-2017 Antarctic tourism season. Ctrip, a Shanghai-based online travel agency, also noted that the number of Chinese visitors going to Antarctica would probably rise to more than 10,000 during the 2018-2019 season.

The number of Chinese travelers to Antarctica has increased by 100 times since 2008, and it is expected that the demand will continue to grow in the years ahead. (CGTN)
