North Korean Olympic roster announced

Officials from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced North Korea will send 22 athletes to compete at the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

It was announced earlier that the North and South Korean teams would march together during the opening ceremony.

IOC President Thomas Bach said North Korea would compete in five disciplines such as figure skating, short speed skating, and alpine and cross-country skiing.  North Korean athletes will also join a unified women’s ice hockey team. (AP)

Macron warns UK can’t keep full access to EU

French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that Britain is likely to negotiate a unique relationship with the European Union before it leaves the bloc next year while stressing that any agreement must be consistent with EU rules.

During a BBC program on Saturday, Macron said Britain could not maintain its full access to the EU’s single market if it doesn’t contribute to its budget and accept its founding principles, such as free movement of people, goods, services, and capital. (AP)  

Trump laments ‘nice present’ of shutdown on inauguration anniversary

US President Donald Trump marked the first anniversary of his inauguration on Saturday with his government in shutdown, lashing out at Democrats over the collapse of budget negotiations as lawmakers seek to thrash out a deal. Essential services and military activity will continue, but hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers will be sent home without wages and on-duty soldiers will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the US government. Strong earthquake in Urumqi

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Urumqi, capital of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 9:50 pm this Saturday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

Several railways connected to Urumqi were suspended. (People's Daily app)

Alleged drunk British Airways pilot taken off plane

A British Airways pilot was removed from the cockpit of a flight amid fears that he was drunk. After worried airline workers alerted the authority, police rushed on the plane and handcuffed the first officer on Saturday, according to The Sun newspaper. Officials said 49-year-old man from west London has been arrested “on suspicion of performing an aviation function when the level of alcohol was over the prescribed limit.” (AP)

China’s ‘Ice Boy’ arrives in Beijing

Wang Fuman, also known as “Ice Boy” became the latest Chinese internet sensation after a picture of him in classroom with frosted hair went viral. Wang braved frigid temperatures, wearing nothing but a thin coat, walked 1.5 hours to school. After learning about his story, People’s Public Security University of China extended a warm invitation to help the boy achieve his dream of visiting Beijing. (CGTN)
