Xi extends Chinese New Year greetings to all Chinese

Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended Chinese New Year greetings to all Chinese people.

He wished Chinese people of all ethnic groups a better life and the country greater prosperity in the new year.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks during a three-day inspection tour of southwest China's Yunnan Province which concluded Tuesday.

There, Xi extended Chinese New Year greetings to local residents, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese nationals.

On the anti-poverty fight, Xi ordered focusing on areas with extreme poverty, preventing people from falling back into poverty due to illness, injury or the lack of follow-up policies, and further aligning developmental poverty relief with protective poverty relief. (Xinhua)

Passenger trips total 758 mln since start of Spring Festival travel rush

The number of passenger trips rose 2.5 percent year on year to 758 million in the first 10 days of the Spring Festival travel rush, official data showed.

From Jan. 10 to 19, 117 million railway trips were made, up 20.3 percent from one year earlier, according to the Ministry of Transport (MOT).

The country reported 612 million road trips as well as 8.84 million trips through waterway transportation, which increased by 4.8 percent year on year.

Civil aviation sector operated 19.13 million passenger trips during the period, registering a 9.1-percent yearly growth, MOT data showed. (Xinhua)

First case of novel coronavirus reported in US

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday that the first case of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been reported in the United States.

A man in his 30s traveling from Wuhan of central China to Washington state in the middle of last week was diagnosed with pneumonia.

CDC officials said the man hospitalized outside Seattle was "in good condition."

The case was detected prior to the implementation of screening at three US airports last Friday, according to the CDC. (Xinhua)

Iran confirms Ukrainian plane hit by two short-range missiles

Iran's civil aviation authority confirmed two missiles were fired at a Ukrainian airliner that was brought down earlier this month, in a preliminary report posted on its website late Monday.

"Two Tor-M1 missiles were launched from the northern side at this plane," Iranian state IRIB TV reported Tuesday, citing the latest report by Iran's Civil Aviation Organization, adding that "the way the missiles caused the incident and the analysis of this measure is under study."

The Kiev-bound Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800, crashed near Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport shortly after takeoff on January 8, killing all 176 people on board. (CGTN)

Japan becomes most visited destination for Chinese tourists in 2019

Japan ranked first on the list of popular overseas destinations for Chinese tourists in 2019, snatching the top spot from Thailand. More travelers from China are planning their trips to the neighboring country, encouraged by a simplified visa application and expansion of direct flights.

Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) shows that between January and October 2019, the number of tourists from the Chinese mainland to Japan exceeded 8.13 million, up 13.5 percent year on year. Ctrip expects more than 9 million Chinese visitors to Japan this year. (CGTN)

CFA has 'no plans' to move Olympic qualifiers away from Wuhan

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) has no plans to move the upcoming 2020 Olympic women's soccer qualifiers out of Wuhan, where coronavirus-related pneumonia cases have been reported, a CFA source said on Monday.

Australia, China, Thailand and Chinese Taipei are set to play a series of qualifying matches in Wuhan from February 3 to 9.

"For the time being, there are no plans to hold the qualifiers at different places or on different dates," the source said. "If any decision is made, it will be announced soon." (Xinhua)
