China delivers first-ever cloned monkeys

Researchers in China officially made history on Wednesday when it was announced they had successfully cloned two monkeys. 

The macaque monkeys, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, were cloned from fetal fibroblasts, a cell found in connective tissue.
The cloning method involves removing the nucleus from a donor egg cell and replacing it with one taken out of a cell from another animal.

Previous attempts to do this have ended in failure, never making it beyond the embyonic stage. (People’s Daily app)

North Korea bares details of art performances in Winter Games

On Tuesday, North Korea gave Seoul officials the performance schedule for the art troupe that will perform next month at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The North Korean art troupe will perform the day before the opening ceremony in Gangneung. And on February 11, they will perform at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul. (People’s Daily app)

PM Modi addresses protectionist trend at Davos forum

On Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns over the recent wave of trade protectionism affecting global relations.

Modi’s comments were echoed by China and followed reports that the US had approved new tariffs on imported solar-energy panels and washing machines. (Xinhua)

Democrats withdraw offer to fund Trump's border wall

Democrats recently announced they had withdrawn an offer to help fund US President Donald Trump’s Mexico border wall.

During Trump’s presidential campaign, he said Mexico would cover the costs needed to build a wall along the southwestern border of the US.

Mexico has always rejected the idea. (Reuters)

Prosecutors aim to bar sadistic parents from contacting their children

Prosecutors in California are asking a judge to bar the parents accused of torturing and enslaving their 13 children from contacting them.

The case has received international attention, and many have offered to take care of the seven adult children and six minors in efforts to keep them together.  (AP)

Top 100 Chinese fugitive turns himself in

Chinese fugitive and former housing reform head, Hu Yuxing, handed himself over to authorities in Beijing on Wednesday.

After 16 years of living abroad in Australia, Hu first made international headlines when he was listed on China’s Top 100 most wanted fugitives in 2015. (CGTN)

Yao Ming says basketball reforms will deliver

NBA All-Star and the President of the Chinese Basketball Association, Yao Ming, said the basketball reforms he has made will pay off.

One of Yao’s basketball measures was the formation of two national teams. A move aimed at increasing the level of competition.

Next year, China will host the 18th FIBA Basketball World Cup. (Xinhua)

Oscars snub Asian films despite box office results

In light of the sexual misconduct allegations sweeping in Hollywood, female talent and female films were the primary focus for this year’s Oscar nominations. And once again, Asian films were snubbed.

The nominees were announced Tuesday morning revealing a diversity in budgets, but not regions. 

While the Academy Awards are almost exclusively a US ceremony, one category, Best Foreign Language Film, honors films made in non-English speaking countries. (CGTN)
