China promotes filial piety with advertisements selection

45 public service advertisements promoting filial piety stood out in a selection jointly held by the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) and the National Committee on Aging.

Covering radio and television advertising as well as graphics, the advertisements have been submitted to a public database of the administration and are now available to radio and television broadcasting institutions across the country, the NRTA said in a circular Tuesday. (Xinhua)

China has over 200 million private cars

China had 260 million motor vehicles by the end of 2019, up 8.83 percent year on year, including 207 million private cars, the Ministry of Public Security said Tuesday.

The number of new energy vehicles reached 3.81 million last year, said the ministry, adding that the increase in the number of new energy vehicles had exceeded 1 million for two consecutive years. (Xinhua)

Death toll of stampede at Soleimani's funeral rises above 50

The death toll of a stampede at the funeral of slain Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Iran's Kerman city rose to more than 50 on Tuesday, with the number of injured rising to 212, local media reported.

The crush in the southeastern city came as Iran prepared to bury Revolutionary Guards commander Qassem Soleimani, a hugely popular figure in the Islamic republic.

Soleimani, the head of the Guards' Quds Force foreign operations arm, was killed on Friday in a US drone strike near Baghdad international airport, an operation that shocked Iran. (AFP)

European powers reject Turkey's decision to send troops to Libya

Top European diplomats emerged from a Tuesday meeting saying continuing outside interference is fueling the crisis in Libya and that there is no military solution to it.

Top diplomats from Britain, Italy, Germany, France as well as the European Union said in a joint statement after the meeting that "there is no military solution to the Libyan crisis... An immediate cessation of hostilities is therefore crucial."

Turkish President Recep Erdogan said on Sunday evening that Turkey is "gradually" sending troops to Libya under a deal inked with its UN-recognized Government of National Accord. (Xinhua)

Plane skids off runway in Istanbul, flights suspended

A passenger plane skidded off the runway in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Tuesday, temporarily shutting down the airport.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus, skidded as it landed in the morning at Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

The airline said there were no deaths or injuries. Istanbul governor’s office said all 164 passengers were safely evacuated. (AP)

NASA planet hunter finds Earth-size habitable-zone exoplanet

NASA's planet-hunting satellite TESS has discovered its first Earth-size planet in its star's habitable zone, according to NASA scientists.

They used NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to confirm the planet called TOI 700 d. Its distance to the host star is just right to allow the presence of liquid water on the surface, according to NASA.

The planet is located just over 100 light years away from Earth. It orbits every 37 days and receives from its star 86 percent of the energy that the sun provides to Earth, according to the study. (Xinhua)

Tokyo 2020 unveils 20 official Olympic and Paralympic posters

Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics on Monday unveiled 20 official art posters, two of which feature calligraphy of Chinese characters.

Twelve posters are based on the theme of the Olympic Games and eight on the Paralympics. They were put on display to the public at Tokyo's Museum of Contemporary Art on Tuesday. The exhibition will run until February 16.

The two Chinese characters are "Xiang", which means "fly high" by Shoko Kanazawa, and "Kai", which means "open" by Koji Kakinuma. (Xinhua)
