Leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the state Sunday paid tribute to deceased national heroes at the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tian'anmen Square.

President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), joined representatives from all walks of life to mark the country's Martyrs' Day on the eve of National Day.

Other senior leaders including Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji, Han Zheng and Wang Qishan also attended the event.

At 10 a.m., participants sang the national anthem and then bowed their heads in silent tribute to those who devoted their lives to the liberation of the Chinese people and the construction of the People's Republic of China, which was founded in 1949.

Xi straightened the red ribbons on the baskets and led a group of senior officials in a walk around the monument to pay tribute.

China's top legislature approved Sept. 30 as Martyrs' Day in 2014 to commemorate those who lost their lives for national independence and prosperity. (Xinhua)

China said Sunday that it has expanded a preferential policy to exempt temporarily certain profits obtained by overseas investors from withholding income tax to encourage inbound investment.

China has previously deferred withholding income tax on profits distributed to overseas investors by resident enterprises in the country and directly reinvested in encouraged investment projects.

Now the scope of the exemption has been expanded to all foreign investment projects other than prohibited ones, according to a policy document released by the Ministry of Finance and three other government departments.

The exemption is effective from January 1, 2018. (Xinhua)

DPRK FM: Denuclearization is premised on its trust in America

李勇浩.jpg

"North Korea needs more trust in the US and their developing relationship before it will get rid of its nuclear weapons," Ri Yong-ho, the Foreign Minister of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said on Saturday in a speech at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

"The perception that sanctions can bring us to our knees is a pipe dream of the people who are ignorant of us," he said, adding that the continued sanctions are "deepening our mistrust" and deadlocking the current diplomacy.

The key to consolidating peace and security on the Korean Peninsula is to implement the joint statement adopted at the historic summit between the DPRK's leader Kim Jong UN and US President Donald Trump in Singapore in June, said Ri.

It's reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is planning to visit Pyongyang next month to prepare for a second Kim-Trump summit. (People's Daily app)

Elon Musk to resign as chair of Tesla board but remain CEO

Elon Musk has reached a deal over fraud charges that will see him step down as electric automaker Tesla's chairman of the board and pay a $20 million dollar fine but stay on as CEO, US securities regulators said Saturday.

The SEC had charged Musk with securities fraud, alleging that he misled investors when he tweeted on August 7 that he had "funding secured" to privatize the electric automaker at $420 dollars a share.

The SEC said Musk's statements on Twitter were "false and misleading" and that he had never discussed the plans with company officials or potential funders.

Under the agreement, he will be ineligible to serve as chairman of the board for a period of three years and will be replaced by an "independent chairman," while two "independent directors" will also be appointed by Tesla, the SEC said. (AFP)

Chinese Internet giant Tencent Holdings on Sunday announced its first restructuring in six years, with two new business groups to be established.

The company will integrate its original seven business groups into six, according to a company statement.

A new business group on cloud and smart industries will be formed, while the other one is focused on platform and content.

A technology committee will also be established, according to Tencent. It pledged to continue to increase investment into laboratories on AI, robotics and quantum computing.

Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO of Tencent, called the restructuring a "strategic upgrading" for the company, adding that Tencent will continue to strengthen research and development of frontier science and technology. (Xinhua)

Thai PM vows to fix Chinese tourists confidence after airport assault

泰国总理.jpg

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Sunday called on government agencies to take action to restore Chinese tourists’ confidence in the country.

Prayut’s remarks came after a Chinese tourist was assaulted by a security guard at a Bangkok airport earlier this week.

Thailand’s image has been seriously tarnished due to this avoidable incident, said the prime minister. The airport is the very first piece of land where foreigners set their feet into Thailand, and when the airport staff deal with disputes with international arrivals, they should follow the international norms and manage their temper, Prayut added.

Thailand’s deputy tourist police chief Surachate Hakparn said he will start the investigation on the reports that immigration officers at airports ask for tips from Chinese tourists. (People's Daily app)
