Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at a reception held Monday at the Great Hall of the People to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). 

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed holding high the banner of unity and striving for the realization of national rejuvenation. 

Over the past 70 years, the Chinese people under the leadership of the CPC have successfully blazed a path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and advanced socialism with Chinese characteristics into a new era, Xi said. 

Unity is an important guarantee for the Chinese people and the Chinese nation to overcome all the risks and challenges on the path forward and to achieve new victories, Xi said. (Xinhua)

1.98 million daily entry, exit trips expected for National Day holiday

The upcoming National Day holiday is expected to see a daily average of 1.98 million inbound and outbound trips made by Chinese and foreign tourists, up 2.7 percent year on year, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA). 

The administration said Sunday the average daily tourist flow at major airports in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu are expected to reach 79,000, 100,000, 55,000, and 21,000 respectively, with noticeable increases over last year. (Xinhua)

China's research vessel returns to Qingdao after completing Arctic expedition

China's oceanographic research vessel, Xiangyanghong 01, has returned to Qingdao, a coastal city in the eastern province of Shandong, after completing the country's 10th Arctic research expedition, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. 

Carrying a team of scientists, the vessel spent 49 days at sea and sailed more than 10,300 nautical miles, reaching 76.02 degrees north latitude. 

The research team carried out a series of surveys, including trawling, sampling and using the Chinese underwater glider Haiyan to observe and monitor the Arctic environment. (Xinhua)

Ukraine’s leader: We can’t be ordered to investigate Biden

Ukraine’s president said his country can’t be pressured into opening an investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden or his son. 

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is trying to contain damage at home and abroad after the world learned last week that Trump pushed him to “look into” Biden and his son Hunter, who served on the board of a troubled Ukrainian gas company. 

“We are open, we are ready to investigate, but it has nothing to do with me. Our independent law enforcement agencies are ready to investigate any violations of the law,” he said. He didn’t elaborate on what could trigger an eventual probe. (AP) 

Syria, Iraq open key border crossing

The Bukamal-Qaim border crossing between Syria and Iraq was reopened on Monday for the first time since its closure in 2014 when Islamic State (IS) militants captured areas on both sides of the border. 

The crossing is one of three major border crossings shared between Iraq and Syria and is considered one of the major supply routes across the Middle East. 

In 2017, the Iraqi forces captured the Al-Qaim area from IS and the Syrian army captured the al-Bukamal. (Xinhua)

Forever 21 fashion chain files for bankruptcy

US low-price fashion chain Forever 21, a one-time hot destination for teen shoppers that fell victim of its own rapid expansion and changing consumer tastes, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. 

The privately held company based in Los Angeles said Sunday it will close up to 178 stores. The company once had more than 800 stores in 57 countries. 

Forever 21 was founded in 1984 and rode a wave of popularity among young customers that took off in the mid-1990s. (AP) 

4 giant panda cubs make public debut in Southwest China

Four newborn giant panda cubs made their first public appearance on Monday at the Chongqing Zoo in Southwest China. 

The cubs, two pairs of twins, were born on June 23, a rare case in the breeding history of captive pandas. 

Starting Monday, visitors can view the cubs at the zoo’s nursery from 10:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm every day, according to zoo officials. (Xinhua)
