Chinese premier arrives in Netherlands for official visit

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived on Sunday for an official visit to the Netherlands, the first by a Chinese premier in 14 years.

It is also Li's first trip to the European country as the Chinese premier.

The Netherlands is one of the first western countries to establish diplomatic ties with new China and the two countries decided to build an open and pragmatic partnership for comprehensive cooperation during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit in 2014, said Li in a written statement upon his arrival.

As two large trading nations, China and the Netherlands are important trading partners for each other, he said, noting that he hopes the visit will further enhance political trust between the two countries.

During his three-day visit, the premier will hold in-depth discussions with Mark Rutte, prime minister of the Netherlands, and meet with Dutch King Willem-Alexander. He is also set to visit a hi-tech exhibition and address a business forum in The Hague. (Xinhua)

All Israeli airlines to stop flying from 2019 due to security concerns: media

Israel's leading airline El Al warned that all Israeli airlines will cease flight operations beginning January 1, 2019 because of security concerns abroad, an Israeli newspaper reported Sunday.

The announcement was made by Eli Dapas, El Al chairman, in a letter to the deputy head of Israel's National Security Council and the director general of the Prime Minister's Office.

According to Dapas, the director-general of the Foreign Ministry recently sent him a letter saying the ministry won't employ security workers at foreign airports starting next year as an agreement had yet to be reached with employees.

Any change in the security system requires the consent of multiple bodies, and the government can't make a such decision only two and a half months in advance, Dapas noted. (Xinhua)

Syria’s Interior Minister Muhammad al-Sha'ar said Sunday that the Syrian and Jordanian sides have agreed to re-open the Nasib-Jaber border crossing as of Monday, according to state television.

The border crossing was closed in 2015 when rebels took over the Nasib area and the crossing in the countryside of Daraa Province in Southern Syria.

The Syrian army seizied Daraa and the border crossing in July after rebels surrendered and agreed to evacuate rebel-held Northern Syria.

Ahead of the crisis, Nasib was the country’s busiest border crossing as it is situated on the Damascus-Amman international highway. (Xinhua)

A rescue team Sunday began retrieving the bodies of the climbers -- five South Koreans and four Nepalis killed in a violent storm on Nepal's Mount Gurja, a freak accident that has left the mountaineering community reeling.

A helicopter dropped four mountain guides at the camp where the South Korean climbing expedition was staying when powerful winds and snow swept through, killing the entire team and scattering their bodies as far away as 500 meters.

The storm destroyed the expedition's camp, which struck late Thursday or Friday, flattening tents and leaving a tangled mess of tarpaulin and broken polls. (AFP)
