China, Norway vow to write new chapter in bilateral ties

On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with visiting Norwegian King Harald V in Beijing. Both leaders agreed to inject new impetus into the development of bilateral relations, and start a new chapter on the traditional friendship between the two nations.

Xi expressed his appreciation for the Norwegian king and the royal family's long-term concern and support for the development of China-Norway relations, lauding their important contributions in promoting friendship between the two countries.

Noting how Norway was one of the first European countries to recognize the People's Republic of China and China's market economy status, Xi said next year will mark the 65th anniversary of China-Norway diplomatic ties, and later added that China stands ready to use the opportunity to open up a better future for the bilateral relations.

For his part, Harald V said he was glad to pay the state visit to China again, hailing the country’s rapid development and great changes. He said the visit was also an indication that Norway-China ties are back on track and once again have shown strong vitality. (Xinhua)

Chinese premier arrives in Belgium for working visit, ASEM summit

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived Brussels on Tuesday for a working visit to Belgium and the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit.

This is the third visit to Belgium by the Chinese premier in four years.

During his visit, Li will hold talks with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel. The two heads of government will also jointly meet the press and witness the signing of a series of documents on cooperation between the two sides.

Peace, development, opening-up and cooperation remain the mainstream of our time despite the complicated changes and uncertainties the world is facing, Li said upon arrival.

He suggested that Asia and Europe, as two major economic blocks and stabilizing forces in the world, enhance dialogue and cooperation, safeguard world peace, jointly meet challenges and pursue development. (Xinhua)

US, Saudi Arabia agree on "thorough" investigation into journalist's disappearance

The US State Department said on Tuesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo agreed with Saudi Arabia on the importance of conducting a "thorough, transparent, and timely" investigation into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The case of Khashoggi, a journalist and columnist for The Washington Post, has become a major source of tension between the Kingdom and the West.

Khashoggi has been missing since enteringthe Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2.

Unconfirmed reports said that Khashoggi was likely killed inside the compound, a claim denied by Saudi officials as "baseless." (Xinhua)

China's vaccine maker fined 9.1 billion yuan

The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) and Jilin Food and Drug Administration fined Changchun Changsheng Life Sciences for the recent vaccine scandal, totaling 9.1 billion yuan ($1.32 billion) on Tuesday. 

CFDA announced it has revoked Changsheng's vaccine and biological product production license. Jilin Food and Drug Administration Drug revoked Changchun Changsheng’s Manufacturing Certificate and all illegal products and also imposed a total fine of 9.1 billion yuan.

Gao Junfang and 13 people directly in charge of the vaccine manufacturer will also face penalties. The case has been transferred to judicial authorities. (People's Daily app)

Complete Tibetan epic set for 2019 publication

The most complete collection of “The Epic of King Gesar,” generally considered the world's longest folk epic, will be published next year.

The epic tale depicts the story of how an 11th century Tibetan demigod conquered his enemies and helped ordinary people. Researchers have obtained different editions from Tibetans and versions published over the last six decades. 

The collection will contain over 370 volumes exceeding 80 million words. Some versions will go on public display for the first time ever. (Xinhua)

China completes Mariana Trench research mission

A team of 59 Chinese researchers returned Tuesday to Sanya in southern Hainan Province from the Mariana Trench after completing a 54-day, 7,292-nautical-mile deep-sea research mission.

Researchers have achieved fruitful results in a mission that includes a deep-sea equipment test and scientific research in disciplines such as geophysics, marine geology, geochemistry and marine biology, according to Bao Gengsheng, chief scientist of the expedition.

During the expedition, two 7,000-meter-class deep-sea gliders operated continuously for 46 days, making it the only abyss-class glider in the world that can work continuously for that period of time. (Xinhua)

Biomarker reveals oldest clue for animals: study

US researchers have found the oldest evidence for animal life, dating back at least 100 million years, well before the Cambrian explosion of animal fossils.

The study, published on Monday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, described a steroid compound produced by sponges that are among the earliest forms of animal life.

The biomarker they identified has a unique structure that is currently only known to be synthesized by certain species of modern sponges, according to the study. (Xinhua)
