Xi sends congratulatory letter to 6th World Internet Conference

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the 6th World Internet Conference, which opened Sunday in the town of Wuzhen in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

Xi pointed out that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Internet.

A new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating, and new technologies, new applications and new forms of business such as artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things are just unfolding, he said.

It is the common responsibility of the international community to develop, use, and govern the internet well so that it can better benefit mankind, Xi said. (Xinhua)

China ranks second globally in internet development: report

China ranks second globally in the development of the internet, trailing only the US, said a report released Sunday.

Among all countries, China ranks first in the application of the internet, and second in innovation capacity and industry development, according to the World Internet Development Report 2019, which was released during the 6th World Internet Conference held in the river town of Wuzhen in East China's Zhejiang Province.

E-commerce in China is also booming. In 2018, the country's e-commerce transactions totaled 31.6 trillion yuan, up 8.5 percent. E-commerce services generated 3.5 trillion yuan in revenue, up 20.3 percent. (Xinhua)

Kurdish forces fully withdraw from besieged Syria town: monitor

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces withdrew fully from the Turkish-besieged border town of Ras al-Ain in northern Syria Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said.

Kurdish officials say the evacuation of the town of Ras al-Ayn will be followed by a withdrawal of their forces from a broader section of the border with Turkey, a central requirement of the cease-fire deal.

The withdrawal is supposed to take place before Tuesday evening, when the pause in fighting is set to end. (AP)

3 soldiers die, 3 hurt in training accident in US state Georgia

At least three soldiers were killed and three more injured Sunday when an armored vehicle crashed during training exercises at Fort Stewart in the southeastern US state of Georgia, according to a USA Today report.

The soldiers, with the Army's 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, were riding in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. 

An investigation is underway and details of the incident were not immediately released. (Xinhua)

Qantas completes longest non-stop New York-Sydney flight

Australia’s Qantas on Sunday completed the first non-stop commercial flight from New York to Sydney, which was used to run a series of tests to assess the effects of ultra-long-haul flights on crew fatigue and passenger jetlag.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner touched down in Sydney early Sunday morning after a flight of 19 hours and 16 minutes — the world’s longest.

Qantas said tests ranged from monitoring pilot brain waves, melatonin levels and alertness to exercise classes for passengers. (AP)

Over 76 pct young Chinese live sped-up lives: survey

More than 76 percent of young Chinese think they are living a sped-up life, according to a survey released by China Youth Daily.

However, 83.1 percent of the interviewees found that although they are busy every day, they do not have the sense of fulfillment they expected.

The advent of the information age and higher self-expectations are regarded as two major reasons why young people live a fast-paced life, according to the survey. (Xinhua)

'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' leads Chinese mainland box office

"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil," a sequel to the 2014 dark fantasy film "Maleficent" with Angelina Jolie portraying the title role, topped the Chinese mainland box office Saturday, the China Movie Data Information Network said Sunday.

The film moved up to the top spot from the third by grossing over 67.81 million yuan on its second day in theaters.

In second place was "One Piece: Stampede," the 14th feature film of the Japanese "One Piece" animation film series, which raked in around 54.45 million yuan also on its second day at the box office. (Xinhua)
