Unrest-hit Hong Kong outlaws wearing masks in protests

The government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) established an anti-mask law on Friday in the latest drive to end the prolonged violence.

The ban, designed to end violence and restore order, will come into effect on Saturday.

The move added Hong Kong to the list of countries and regions that have anti-mask legislations, including France, Canada, Italy and many states in the United States. (Xinhua)

China's railways work to navigate National Day holiday travel peak

China's railways are striving to ensure the safety of all passengers during the National Day holiday travel peak.

Trains throughout the country are expected to host 13.32 million passenger trips on Friday alone, said China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.

The total train trips made nationwide from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3 stood at 80.13 million, the company said.

To accommodate the travel rush, an additional 586 trains were put into service on Friday, it said. (Xinhua)

Pakistan, Afghan Taliban agree to resume peace talks halted by US

Pakistan and political representatives of the Afghan Taliban on Thursday agreed on the earliest resumption of the Afghan peace process that was unilaterally and abruptly called off by US President Donald Trump in early September.

A delegation of the Taliban Political Commission (TPC) met Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the Pakistani Foreign Ministry and discussed ways for resuming the peace process.

It is the first visit of a Taliban delegation to Pakistan since the establishment of the TPC in 2013. (China Plus)

Japan plans to expand pig vaccination area to fight hog cholera

Japanese Farm Minister Taku Eto said on Friday that the government plans to expand the area for pig vaccination following suspected hog cholera infections in two wild boars in Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo.

According to the ministry, the disease, also known as swine fever, affects only pigs and wild boars and has a high fatality rate. It does not affect humans, even if meat from an infected animal is consumed. (Xinhua)

China UnionPay expands services to 176 countries, regions

Chinese card payment giant China UnionPay had extended its services to 176 countries and regions.

Merchants in countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chile began to accept UnionPay cards for the first time, the company said in a statement.

The Shanghai-based financial service provider, now accepted by over 28 million merchants around the globe, has so far issued over 120 million cards in 57 foreign countries and regions, including Bahrain and Madagascar. (Xinhua)

Vaping-linked lung injury kills 18, sickens 1,080 in US

The number of patients suffering from probable lung injury associated with e-cigarette use has surged to more than a thousand, US health authorities said Thursday, while the death toll from the outbreak now stands at 18.

A report by clinicians in North Carolina last month pointed to the inhalation of fatty substances from aerosolized oils as causing acute lipoid pneumonia, but a new study by the Mayo Clinic published this week found patients' lungs had been exposed to noxious fumes. (AFP)

Dina Asher-Smith makes history to claim 200m gold at World Championships

Dina Asher-Smith seized her golden opportunity to win the world championship 200 meters on Wednesday and become the first British woman to claim a global sprint title.

Asher-Smith, the silver medalist in the 100m, dominated a 200m field depleted by injuries and withdrawals to claim gold in 21.88 seconds at the Khalifa Stadium.

The 23-year-old becomes the first British woman in World Championship history to win either a 100m or 200m gold. (CGTN)
