China's elderly population may reach 487 mln by 2050

China will have a population of 487 million aged 60 or older sometime around 2050, according to the Office of the National Working Commission on Aging.

Recently, China has stepped up efforts in advancing diversified elderly care services based on community and home, while promoting integration and medical services, as well as trials for long-term care insurance.

China now has 163,800 elderly care institutions and facilities which offer 7.46 million beds for senior citizens. (Xinhua)

World's longest double-deck suspension bridge opens

A double-deck suspension bridge with the world’s longest span opened in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province, on Tuesday.

The first double-deck bridge over the Yangtze River, with a 1,700-meter-long main span, stretches 4.13 km in total length.

The upper deck of the 10th Yangtze River bridge has six lanes with an 80 kph speed limit, while the lower deck, which also has six lanes, has a speed limit of 60 kph. (Xinhua)

UN may run out of money by end of October: Guterres

The United Nations is running a deficit of $230 million, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, and may run out of money by the end of October.

In a letter intended for the 37,000 employees at the UN secretariat, Guterres said unspecified, “additional stop-gap measures” would have to be taken to ensure salaries and entitlements are paid.

To cut costs, Guterres mentioned postponing conferences and meetings and reducing services, while also restricting official travel to only essential activities and taking measures to save energy. (AFP)

FBI: Inmate is the deadliest serial killer in US history

The inmate who claims to have killed more than 90 women across the country is now considered to be the deadliest serial killer in US history, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

Samuel Little, who has been behind bars since 2012, told investigators last year that he was responsible for about 90 killings nationwide between 1970 and 2005. In a news release on Sunday, the FBI announced that federal crime analysts believe all of his confessions are credible, and officials have verified 50 so far. (AP)

US F-16 fighter jet crashes in SW Germany, pilot safely ejected

The fighter jet that crashed on Tuesday afternoon near the southwestern German city of Trier was an F-16 fighter jet belonging to the US Air Force, said US Airbase Spangdahlem.

The airbase’s website said the F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed at about 3 pm Tuesday during a routine training sortie. The pilot ejected safely and sustained minor injuries. (Xinhua)

'Ne Zha' will represent the Chinese mainland in the 92nd Oscar race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on Monday that 93 films from different countries and regions will compete for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.

According to a statement from the academy, Chinese director Yang Yu's animated film "Ne Zha" will participate on behalf of the Chinese mainland, where it has grossed more than 4.9 billion yuan.

The 92nd Academy Awards will be presented at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 9 next year. (CGTN)
