1st China International Import Expo concludes with $57.8 billion inked in deals

The cumulative intended deals reached at the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) valued at $57.8 billion, announced Sun Chenghai, deputy director of the CIIE Bureau.

The six-day trade event that concluded Saturday in Shanghai was fruitful.

More than 570 new products, technologies or services developed globally or domestically were launched, according to preliminary statistics, Sun said at a press briefing Saturday.

Among the total deals, $16.46 billion came from the intelligent and high-end equipment exhibition area, according to Sun. (People's Daily app)

Xi-Trump scheduled meeting at G20 has great significance, says senior Chinese official

The scheduled meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump during the G20 summit in Argentina had great significance, said a senior Chinese official Friday.

Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and also director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a press conference following the second China-US Diplomatic and Security Dialogue.

China and the United States should strengthen communication and keep close coordination with elaborate preparations to ensure that the important meeting will yield positive results, Yang added. (Xinhua)

Hainan to create over 7,000 jobs for FTZ construction

China's southern island province of Hainan announced Saturday at a job fair in Beijing that more than 7,000 new jobs will be created to promote free trade zone (FTZ) construction.

A total of 7,471 jobs from 371 enterprises and public institutions will recruit talents in various fields, including biopharmaceutics, network technology, oceanography, tourism.

Shen Xiaoming, governor of Hainan province, said that with its unique location, and as more well-known enterprises are coming to the island, Hainan has become fertile soil for talents. (Xinhua)

Macron and Merkel mark WWI armistice centenary

President Emmanuel Macron of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany met Saturday at the site near Compiegne in eastern France where Germany officially surrendered on November 11, 1918, bringing to a close more than four years of slaughter on the Western front.

It was the first time a German leader had visited the site since World War II.

The visit underscored the close ties between two countries that fought three wars between 1870 and 1945 but are now seen as the lynchpins of peace in Western Europe. (AFP)

2 killed in Southern California fire that’s doubled in size

A wildfire that tore through Malibu mansions and working-class suburban homes in Southern California’s hills and canyons has killed two people and had more than doubled in size by Saturday.

Officials took advantage of temporarily calm conditions to assess damage from the blaze that has burned 109 square miles (282 square kilometers) north and west of downtown Los Angeles.

Wildfires burning across California have now killed 11 people, including nine found dead in a massive fire in Northern California that destroyed the town of Paradise.

US President Donald Trump issued an emergency declaration providing federal funding to help firefighters battling the wildfires across California. (AP)

Wu Jing wins Best Actor for 'Wolf Warriors 2'

Wu Jing wins the Best Actor of  the 34th Popular Movies Hundred Flowers Award for his performance in "Wolf Warriors 2".

The jury believes that he has brought a Chinese hero with a firm and tenacious will to the audience by playing this character named Leng Feng in the movie.

In addition, Wu Jing has been appointed the ambassador for the 27th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival, which is taking place in Southern China's Kung Fu town Foshan in Guangdong Province. (People's Daily app)
