CPPCC National Committee holds first open day

The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its first open day for the public Saturday.

About 200 visitors, including university teachers and students and local citizens, visited the working sites of the CPPCC National Committee.

During the trip, the visitors also watched a video reflecting the work of the National Committee of CPPCC and exhibitions showcasing the history of the CPPCC. (Xinhua)

33 people injured as bus hits concrete barrier in Hong Kong

33 people were injured on Saturday evening when a bus hit a concrete barrier on an expressway in Hong Kong's Kwun Tong District, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said.

The accident occurred around 6 pm local time when a double-decker bus hit the concrete barrier in Kwun Tong District, Kowloon East.

The injured passengers in the accident were sent to five hospitals for treatment. (Xinhua)

Sri Lanka's elections chief says presidential polls ends peacefully

Sri Lanka's Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said on Saturday that the country's presidential polls had concluded peacefully without any major injuries or violence reported and with a voter turnout of over 80 percent.

Deshapriya said that the winner was likely to be announced by Sunday evening and the new president is likely to be sworn in by early next week.

A total of 35 candidates contested the presidential polls on Saturday. (Xinhua)

Iraq closes southern border with Iran to travelers

Iraq closed its southern Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran to travelers from both countries on Saturday, an Iraqi security source and Iranian diplomat said.

The security source said Tehran had demanded the closure because of ongoing public protests in both Iran and Iraq. The border would remain shut until further notice but would not affect goods or trade, they added. 

Iraq has been engulfed in a month-long protest demanding government change. (CGTN)

Prince Andrew again denies having sex with Epstein victim

Britain’s Prince Andrew says he doesn’t remember a woman who has accused him of sexually exploiting her in encounters arranged by Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier and convicted sex offender who committed suicide in August at a New York jail. 

Prince Andrew told BBC Newsnight in an interview scheduled to be broadcast Saturday that he has “no recollection” of meeting Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who says Epstein paid her $15,000 after she had sex with the prince in 2001 when she was 17.

Giuffre says Epstein flew her around the world on his private planes to have sex with powerful men, and that she had sexual encounters with Andrew in London and New York and in the US Virgin Islands. (AP)

Over 1,000 Chinese tourist sites punished amid regulation campaign

More than 5,000 A-level Chinese tourist sites were inspected and reviewed in 2019 amid a nationwide regulation campaign, with 1,186 punished and 405 stripped of their A-level ratings, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

In a separate campaign on cultural and tourism market launched this year, more than 1.2 million law enforcement personnel have inspected over 520,000 business entities, with over 41 million yuan fined or confiscated and 113 business licenses revoked, according to the ministry. (Xinhua)

Scolari 'would listen to an offer' to coach China

Veteran coach Luiz Felipe Scolari could be interested in taking charge of China's national team following the departure of Italian Marcelo Lippi, sources close to the Brazilian told media. 

Scolari's press advisor, Acaz Fellegger, said the 71-year-old "would listen to an offer" if approached by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) about the vacant role.

Lippi resigned as China's head coach on Thursday after a 2-1 defeat to Syria in their World Cup qualifier in Dubai. (Xinhua)
