China issues guideline for enhancing IPR protection

The general offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council have jointly issued a directive calling for intensified protection of intellectual property rights (IPR).

Titled "The Guideline on Strengthening Intellectual Property Rights Protection," the document aims to implement decisions and plans of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on stepping up IPR protection and improve related systems and mechanisms.

According to the document, by 2022, China will strive to curb IPR infringement, and largely overcome challenges, including high costs, low compensation, and difficulties in providing evidence for safeguarding intellectual property rights.

By 2025, social satisfaction with IPR protection in China will reach and maintain a high level. (Xinhua)

China university sets up country's 1st sci-fi academy

A university in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday set up the country's first science fiction research academy.

The Sichuan University and Sichuan Association for Science and Technology jointly established the China Science Fiction Research Academy at the closing of the 5th China (Chengdu) International Science Fiction Conference in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province.

The school, together with the Science Fiction World magazine publisher, is expected to launch the China Science Fiction Review, the first sci-fi academic journal in China, early next year. (Xinhua)

Michael Bloomberg launches Democratic presidential bid

Billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the world’s richest men, has formally launched a Democratic bid for president.

Ending weeks of speculation, the 77-year-old former Republican announced his candidacy Sunday in a written statement posted on a campaign website describing himself as uniquely positioned to defeat President Donald Trump. 

Forbes ranked Bloomberg as the 11th-richest person in the world last year with a net worth of roughly $50 billion. (AP)

At least 23 killed in plane crash in eastern DR Congo

At least 23 bodies were found at the crash site of a plane in a peripheral area of Goma City, North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), officials dealing with the accident said Sunday.

The plane, operating by a local company Busy Bee, crashed into houses a few minutes after taking off from Goma airport en route to Beni, according to local officials. 

According to sources close to the company Busy Bee, a loud detonation from one of the engines was heard shortly after takeoff. 

No passengers survived, including the two crew members. (Xinhua)

28-year-old South Korean singer Goo Hara found dead at home

Twenty-eight-year-old Goo Hara, a former member of K-pop girl group Kara, was found dead at her home on Sunday, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

The report said that the local police found her body at her home in Seoul at about 6 pm, and an investigation into the cause of her death is underway.

In September 2018,  it was reported that there was domestic violence between her and an ex-boyfriend. There were also reports that the ex-boyfriend tried to blackmail her with a sex tape. (CGTN)

Wilder KOs Ortiz to retain WBC heavyweight title

Unbeaten Deontay Wilder landed a devastating right hand to knock out Luis Ortiz in the seventh round and retain his World Boxing Council heavyweight title.

The 34-year-old Wilder remains on course to achieve his goal of unifying all four heavyweight belts despite being largely outboxed by Ortiz before the explosive one-punch finish at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas late Saturday night.

The "Bronze Bomber" recorded his 10th straight title defense to equal Muhammad Ali, who achieved the feat between 1974 and 1978. Only four heavyweights in the history of boxing have made more than 10 consecutive title defenses. (AFP)

Sumatran rhino extinct in Malaysia as lone survivor dies

The Sumatran rhinoceros has become extinct in Malaysia after the last of the species in the country succumbed to cancer on Saturday.

The Wildlife Department in eastern Sabah state on Borneo island said the rhino, named Iman, died of natural causes due to shock in her system. 

It came six months after the death of the country’s only male rhino in Sabah. Another female rhino also died in captivity in 2017 in the state. Efforts to breed them have been futile, but Sabah authorities have harvested their cells for possible reproduction. (AP)
