Xi urges G20 to steer world economy responsibly

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the Group of 20 (G20) to stick to openness, partnership, innovation and inclusiveness and steer world economy responsibly in Buenos Aires on Friday.

Xi made the remarks while addressing the 13th G20 summit in the Argentine capital.

He warned the G20 leaders of accelerated accumulation of risks in global economy and pledged that China will firmly push forward a new round of reform and opening-up, with increased efforts in intellectual property rights protection and more imports. (Xinhua)

BRICS leaders declare common stand on WTO reform

Leaders of the emerging economies' bloc BRICS declared their common stand on the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Buenos Aires on Friday.

A communique was issued after an informal meeting of the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit.

The leaders agreed to safeguard the core values and basic principles of the WTO, and that the WTO should embody the interests of all members, developing members in particular, according to the communique. (Xinhua)

China approves new lithography machine for chip production

China has approved a high-resolution lithography machine that can produce chips as small as 22 nanometers, according to its developer.

The machine was developed by the Institute of Optics and Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With double exposure technology, it is expected to manufacture 10-nanometer chips in the future.

Lithography machines are crucial to chip production, and China has long been lagging behind in this field. (Xinhua)

US, Mexico, Canada sign new USMCA trade deal

The leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada on Friday signed a new trade deal replacing the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, which US President Donald Trump has long denigrated as a “disaster.”

"This is a model agreement that changes the trade landscape forever," Trump said at the signing ceremony in Buenos Aires, on the sidelines of a summit between the leaders of the G20 countries.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was less effusive about the renegotiated regional trade deal, but said the USMCA would resolve the threat of "serious economic uncertainty" that "would have gotten more damaging."

Mexican President Pena Nieto called the revamped version of NAFTA important in shoring up "the view of an integrated North America with the firm belief that together we are stronger and more competitive." (AFP)

Zhangjiakou blast: 15 people in charge of the enterprise are in police custody

15 people in charge of the enterprise, who are blamed for the blast on Wednesday that killed 23 people in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, are in police custody, the local government said.

According to the investigation, vinyl chloride leaked from a gas cylinder and spread to the road outside the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., causing the blasts.

After midnight on Wednesday, an explosion occurred in the vicinity of Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co in Qiaodong District, Zhangjiakou. Most of the victims were truck drivers inside trucks lined up outside a chemical factory. (People's Daily app - Xinhua)

Tsunami warning issued after major earthquake in Alaska

A tsunami waring has been issued after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Anchorage in the US state of Alaska on Friday morning.

The quake, which was initially reported with a magnitude of 6.7, was updated to 7.0, jolting 11 km north of Anchorage around 8:30 am local time on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US National Weather Service in Anchorage said on Twitter that a tsunami alert was issued for Cook Inlet and the southern Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. (Xinhua)

Massive, extended data breach within Marriott’s hotel empire

A security breach inside Marriott’s worldwide hotel empire has compromised the information of as many as 500 million guests, exposing in some cases credit card numbers, passport numbers and birthdates, the company said Friday.

Alarming security analysts, Marriott said that unauthorized access to data at the hotels, once run by Starwood, has been going on since 2014.

It may be among the largest data breaches on record.

The affected hotel brands operated by Starwood before it was acquired by Marriott in 2016 include W Hotels, St. Regis, Sheraton, Westin, Element, Aloft, The Luxury Collection, Le Méridien and Four Points. Starwood branded timeshare properties are also included. (AP)
