China to launch thorough and accurate national economic census

China's fourth national economic census will officially kick off on the first day of 2019.

The survey, which will last three months, will cover all businesses involved in the secondary and tertiary industries.

The census will cover about 30 million impersonal entities and industrial activity units as well as about 60 million self-employed entrepreneurs.

A total of 2 million census workers will be deployed to nearly 900,000 communities to conduct the survey. (Xinhua)

China lodges solemn representations against US for Huawei senior executive's detention

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng summoned US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad on Sunday and lodged solemn representations and strong protests against the detention of a senior executive of Huawei Technologies by the Canadian authorities at the unreasonable behest of the US.

What the US has done severely violates Chinese citizen's legitimate rights and interests, and is vile in nature, said Le in a statement.

China firmly opposes the United States' move and strongly urges the US side to attach great importance to China's solemn stance, take immediate measures to correct the wrong practices, and withdraw the arrest warrant against the Chinese citizen, he said. (Xinhua)

French President Macron prepares 'important announcements' to soothe public anger

With record-low approval ratings, French President Emmanuel Macron is preparing a strong response to the "Yellow Vests" protests against soaring living costs, government officials said Sunday.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves le Drian said, "President Emmanuel Macron will speak and send a strong message to the nation." But he did not give details on the planned measures and the exact time of Macron's speech.

Facing his worst street challenge, the French president is expected to reach out to the nation "early next week" on television to try and convince the people of France to keep their faith in him on restoring the economy and handling social strains. (Xinhua)

Iran inks multi-lateral deals at Azerbaijan tech expo

Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a multilateral deal to establish and connect startup centers, Eghtesadonline news website reported on Sunday.

The contract, inked on the sidelines of Bakutel 2018 in Azerbaijan’s capital city of Baku earlier this week, requires a joint investment of $2 million to expand technological collaboration.

Based on the contract, the startup centers are to connect knowledge-based companies and startups from the four nations and help build technological cooperation. (Xinhua)

Uber makes confidential filing for long-awaited IPO

Uber has filed paperwork for an initial public offering, according to three people with knowledge of the matter, taking a step closer to a key milestone for one of the most closely watched and controversial companies in Silicon Valley.

The ride-hailing company filed the confidential paperwork on Thursday, one of the sources said, in lock-step with its smaller US rival, Lyft, which also announced and IPO filing on Thursday.

Uber’s filing sets the stage for one of the biggest technology listings ever.

Uber's valuation from its most recent private financing was $76 billion, and the IPO could make it rise to $120 billion. (CGTN)

Toyota recalls 13,000 defective vehicles in China

Japanese car maker Toyota has recalled more than 13,000 cars in China due to defects in the electronic control unit (ECU) software for headlights, according to the Chinese market regulator.

Starting Dec. 7, Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. began to recall 13,048 Corolla GL-i model vehicles manufactured between March 19 and Oct. 16, according to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Beams from the headlights may not be appropriately adjusted by the ECU when the rear of the vehicle is lowered due to backseat being fully loaded with passengers, which could cause dizziness for drivers coming from the opposite direction, the statement said. (Xinhua)

Chinese archaeologists unveil deluxe carriage from 2,500 years ago

Archaeologists at the Archaeology Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have unveiled the details of a deluxe carriage unearthed in a cemetery dating back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC) in North China's Hebei Province.

According to the archaeologists, the carriage is 142.5 cm wide, 106 cm in length and has two wheels with a diameter of 140 centimeters and 38 spokes each.

Researchers speculated the occupant of the cemetery was high up in the social pecking order and could have been a tribal leader. (Xinhua)
