Xi, Trump meet in Buenos Aires

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday that he would like to exchange views on issues of common concern with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, and jointly chart the course for China-US relations in the next stage.

Xi made the remarks at a working dinner with Trump. The Chinese president said he was glad to meet President Trump.

Since their previous meeting, Xi said, the world situation has witnessed a lot of changes. As two major countries with great influence, China and the United States shoulder important responsibilities in promoting world peace and prosperity.

Cooperation is the best option for the two countries, Xi said. (Xinhua)

Xi urges G20 to show political leadership on trade, climate change

Chinese President Xi Jinping Saturday called on the Group of 20 (G20) to play a political leading role in nurturing favorable conditions for international trade.

He also urged G20 to inject political impetus into international cooperation on jointly tackling climate change, during discussions at the 13th G20 summit held in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

On trade issue, the Chinese president said that G20 should firstly stick to openness and free trade, maintain and further expand an open market, and realize win-win cooperation through mutual exchanges and complementarity.

Secondly, G20 should stick to inclusiveness, and bring the benefits of international trade and economic globalization to people of all countries and all classes, Xi said.

Thirdly, G20 should uphold rules-oriented spirit and nurture a stable and expectable institutional environment for the healthy development of international trade, he said. (Xinhua)

China's trade volume surpasses 2017 total

China's total imports and exports between January and the middle of November this year surpassed the whole trade volume of 2017, customs data showed Saturday.

The General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the volume was nearly 15 percent higher than the same period of 2017.

Foreign trade totaled 25.05 trillion yuan for the first 10 months of the year, up 11.3 percent from the same period last year. (Xinhua)

Former President George H.W. Bush dies at age 94

George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died Friday at the age of 94.

The former president passed away at 10:10 p.m. local time (1610 GMT) on Friday. Details about his death were not immediately available.

Bush was elected president in 1988 as the successor to Ronald Reagan.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania will attend a state funeral for Mr Bush at Washington’s National Cathedral. (Xinhua)

French protesters clash with police in Paris; over 140 arrested

Paris police said Saturday that at least 65 people including 11 police officers have been injured in violent protests in the French capital. Police also say that 140 people have been arrested.

Some protesters in France have set cars and trash cans on fire in central Paris after police pushed them away from the Arc de Triomphe following violent clashes.

The protests, which began with motorists demonstrating against a fuel tax hike, now involve a broad range of demands related to the country's high cost of living. (AP)

China approves UBS to gain control of securities JV

China's securities regulator has approved UBS AG's plan to gain a majority stake in its mainland securities joint venture (JV).

This made UBS AG the first global financial institution to take advantage of the new rules China put in place in May to further open up its financial market.

UBS AG will raise its stake in the UBS Securities Co. to 51 percent, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said on its website. UBS AG currently holds 24.99 percent of the JV. (Xinhua)
