Russia opposes the US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and it will respond "in an appropriate manner," Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday during a press conference in Brussels that the US would suspend its obligations under the INF Treaty in 60 days unless Russia returns to full compliance with the agreement.

Putin said that Washington began to look for someone to blame and chose Russia, adding that the US, however, provides no evidence of Russian violation. (Xinhua)

Reverence, grace as leaders gather for Bush funeral

布什葬礼.jpg

George H.W. Bush was celebrated with high praise and loving humor Wednesday as the nation bade farewell to the man who was America’s 41st president and the last to fight for the US in wartime.

Three former presidents looked on at Washington National Cathedral as a fourth — George W. Bush — eulogized his dad.

Tens of thousands of Americans have quietly filed in to pay their respects to a man who steered the nation through turbulent times including the end of the Cold War.

The country's five living presidents -- Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Bush's son George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Trump also attended the service at Washington National Cathedral.

George W. Bush extolled his father, not only for his service as president but also as a role model as a loving husband, father and grandfather. (AP-AFP)

UK releases Facebook emails about data privacy

UK DATA PRIVACY AP.jpeg

The British Parliament has released some 250 pages worth of documents that show Facebook considered charging developers for data access.

The parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee received the documents from app developer Six4Three, which had acquired the files dating from 2013-2014, as part of a US lawsuit against the social media giant.

The app developer is suing Facebook over a change to the social network’s privacy policies in 2015 that led Six4Three to shut down its app, Pikinis, which let users find photos of their friends in bathing suits by searching their friends list.

Facebook responded quickly, saying the release was misleading. (AP)

In a medical first, a mother who received a uterus transplant from a dead donor gave birth to a healthy baby, researchers reported Wednesday.

The breakthrough operation, performed in September 2016 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, shows that such transplants are feasible and could help thousands of women unable to have children due to uterine problems, according to a study published in The Lancet.

Until recently, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother. (AFP)
