China's banks offer 350-bln-yuan credit support for epidemic control
China's banks had provided over 349 billion yuan of credit support as of Tuesday to help companies restore production amid the fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Banks have reduced service fees and lowered the loan interest rate for enterprises bearing the brunt of the outbreak, said the China Banking Association.
Companies in the sectors of wholesale, retail, catering, logistics and tourism, as well as labor-intensive manufacturers that have suffered most from the shock of the epidemic will benefit from the preferential policies, according to the association. (Xinhua)
Wuhan increases designated hospitals for COVID-19 patients
The number of designated hospitals has increased to more than 40 in Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, local authorities said.
All 12,000 hospital beds in designated hospitals as well as the two makeshift hospitals, Huoshenshan and Leishenshan, will be used for the treatment of infected patients in severe and critical conditions, according to the Wuhan epidemic control headquarters.
The city has so far activated seven temporary hospitals converted from gyms and exhibition centers, which currently have 4,966 medical workers and 3,972 patients. (Xinhua)
Police say 'lack of oxygen and overheating' killed 39 Vietnamese migrants in UK
Thirty-nine Vietnamese migrants found in the back of a truck in Britain last year died of lack of oxygen and overheating, police said on Tuesday, citing provisional autopsy results.
The victims were found dead in a refrigeration trailer in the county of Essex, east of London, in October last year after having been transported by ferry from Belgium.
The driver of the truck, Maurice Robinson, 25, from Craigavon in Northern Ireland, was one of several arrests. He is awaiting trial on manslaughter charges. (CGTN)
Nissan sues Ghosn seeking damages for property, jet use
Nissan filed a civil suit Wednesday seeking $91 million in damages from the Japanese automaker’s former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
The claim was calculated by adding the costs from what Nissan called Ghosn’s “corrupt practices,” such as rent for overseas property, use of corporate jets and payments to his sister, as well as costs for the internal investigation into Ghosn’s alleged wrongdoings.
Representatives of Ghosn said in a statement they couldn’t comment as they had yet to see the legal documents. (AP)
Queen’s grandson Peter Phillips and wife Autumn to divorce
Peter Phillips, the eldest grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, and his wife Autumn are divorcing after 12 years of marriage.
The couple said in a statement Tuesday that the separation was sad but amicable. They plan to share custody of daughters Savannah, 9 and Isla, 7.
The 42-year-old Phillips is the son of Princess Anne and will be the first of the queen’s eight grandchildren to divorce. (AP)
Japanese man who believes in smiling is world’s oldest
A Japanese man who believes in smiles has become the world’s oldest male at 112 years and 344 days old, according to Guinness World Records.
Chitetsu Watanabe, who was born in Niigata in northern Japan in 1907, received a certificate for his accomplishment on Wednesday at a nursing home in the city.
Asked about the secret to longevity, Watanabe has this advice: Don’t get angry and keep smiling. (AP)
Ferrari unveils SF1000 car for coming F1 season
Ferrari has unveiled its new SF1000 car for the 2020 Formula One season which they hope will deliver a first world drivers title since 2007.
SF1000 acknowledges the fact that the Italian team will start its 1,000th world championship race during the coming campaign, which begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15.
"Maybe it looks a lot like the SF90, but I can assure you it is very different," said Ferrari Team Manager Mattia Binotto. (CGTN)
