UN peacekeeping chief extends greetings for Chinese Lunar New Year

On Friday, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix tweeted: “I join (UN Secretary-General) Antonio Guterres in marking Lunar New Year 2018 and expressing my sincere gratitude to all UN peacekeepers celebrating this joyous festival for their sacrifices and contributions to peace.”

China takes silver in short-track speedskating

China’s young talent Li Jinyu restored pride for women’s short-track team by winning silver in 1,500 meters on February 17.

Moon said North Korea visit 'too early'

On Saturday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said it is still too early to discuss his visit to Pyongyang but is happy to have North Korea participate in the Winter Olympics.

Gangwon chief eyes co-hosting of Asian Winter Games with North Korea

The governor of South Korea’s Gangwon province Choi Moon-soon, said Saturday that he thinks the “mood is ripe enough for the two Koreas to pursue a joint bid to  host a winter sports event.

As for the games’ venues, Choi said he is considering the Pyeongchang Olympics facilities and the Masikryong Ski Resort in North Korea, where leader Kim Jong-un aspires to develop as a lavish sports tourism attraction. (Yonhap)

Mexican helicopter crash kills 13

A military helicopter carrying 28 including several Mexican government officials crashed just before landing in the earthquake-devastated Oaxaca State on Friday. So far, 13 has been killed and 15 were injured. (Xinhua)

Brazilian army takes control of Rio security as violence rises

Brazilian President Michel Temer on Friday handed the military full control of security in Rio de Janeiro amid increasing gang violence.

 “The government will give tough and firm answers, taking all necessary measures to eradicate organized crime,” Temer said. (AFP)

Chinese box office breaks single day sales record

China’s box office raked in more than 1.3 billion yuan Friday, the first day of the Lunar New Year, breaking the single day sales record for the Chinese market, according to Maoyan.

“Monster Hunt 2” led the list with more than 550 million yuan in revenue. (Xinhua)
