China imposes no additional tariffs on coronavirus prevention supplies from US

China will not impose additional tariffs on its imports originated from the United States and eligible for new tariff exemption policies relating to the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus outbreak, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said Saturday.

The commission noted that relevant imports from the United States will not be subject to additional tariffs, while extra duties imposed can be refunded.

The removal of additional tariffs will be valid from Jan. 1 to March 31, it said. (Xinhua)

Iran, Ukraine jointly decipher black box of crashed Ukrainian plane

Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said on Saturday that Iran and Ukraine are jointly investigating the black box of the downed Ukrainian plane in Iran, Tehran Times daily reported.

The aircraft accident investigating board of Iranian and Ukrainian experts is investigating the black box according to standards of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Eslami was quoted as saying.

On Jan. 8, the Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 aircraft flying from Tehran to Kiev crashed near Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all 176 passengers and crew members on board. (Xinhua)

Alleged leader of Iraqi al Qaeda group arrested in Arizona

A man accused of killing two police officers while acting as the leader of an al-Qaeda group in the Iraqi city of Fallujah was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, federal officials said on Friday.

Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri, 42, is wanted in Iraq on charges of premeditated murder of the Iraqi police officers in 2006, according to a statement by the US Attorney's Office District of Arizona.

An Iraqi judge issued a warrant for Al-Nouri's arrest and the government there issued an extradition request to the US Justice Department, the statement said. (CGTN)

Trump lifts US restrictions on anti-personnel landmines

US President Donald Trump's administration on Friday lifted US restrictions on landmines, saying new technology made them safer.

In the latest reversal of a policy of his predecessor Barack Obama, Trump gave the green light to a new generation of "non-persistent" landmines that can be switched off or destroyed remotely rather than staying active in the ground forever.

Obama in 2014 banned the use of anti-personnel landmines with the exception, under pressure from military planners, of the Korean peninsula. (AFP)

Apple to close all stores in China due to novel coronavirus

Apple will close its stores, corporate offices and contact centers in the Chinese mainland until February 9.

The company said on its website that the decision is out of concerns for public health, as the novel coronavirus spreads in China.

The company said its online store in China will remain open. (China Plus)

FDA approves first peanut allergy drug for children

The US Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Palforzia, the first drug treatment for peanut allergy for children aged four to 17 years old.

"Palforzia provides an FDA-approved treatment option to help reduce the risk of these allergic reactions in children with peanut allergy," said Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Those who take Palforzia must continue to avoid peanuts in their diets.

Peanut allergy affects approximately one million children in the United States and only one out of five of these children will outgrow their allergy. (Xinhua)

China women's soccer team quarantined in Australia

China women's national soccer team arrived in Brisbane for a 2020 Tokyo Olympics Qualifying tournament that begins in Sydney on Monday. But the whole team have been quarantined in their hotel by local authorities over concerns about the possible spread of the novel coronavirus.

Vice president of the Chinese Football Association (CFA) Sun Wen said all players and staff members were in good health and practicing indoors, and will work closely with authorities to fulfill all quarantine requirements.

Prior to traveling to Australia, all team members passed a coronavirus screening. (CGTN)
