US to open Jerusalem embassy

The US will relocate its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in May this year, coinciding with Israel’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of its independence, US officials said Friday.

The decision sparked furious protestation from Palestine as Israel’s Independence Day is known by Palestinians as Naqba or “day of catastrophe.”

The decision is likely to damage efforts to restart peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians, putting in greater doubt the traditional US role as a peace broker. (AFP)

AI to take part in Pyeongchang closer

Artificial intelligence will join Beijing 2022’s eight-minute spot at the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Olympics, director Zhang Yimou said Saturday.

“It will feature our invitation to the world to come to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games through modern technology,” Zhang said.

The director, who was also the mastermind of the opening and closing ceremonies of Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympics, said the show will be very “colorful” and will be different from audience expectations. (People’s Daily app)

No more advantages for expertise students

China’s Ministry of Education on Friday issued a notice, requiring primary and middle schools to stop lowering academic performance standards when recruiting students with a specialty by the end of 2020. In China, the term "expertise students" refers to those who are superior to ordinary students in certain aspects like sports and arts.

As a supplement to the entrance examination system, the recruitment of these students provides an opportunity for them to “break the grid,” or cultivate their interests and gifts. (CGTN)

China's Geely becomes largest single shareholder of Daimler

Chinese automaker Geely has become the largest single shareholder of Daimler AG, parent company of Mercedes Benz, German media reported on Friday.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, known as the owner of Swedish automaker Volvo Cars, bought around 9.7 percent of Daimler’s stake. (Xinhua)

Jin Yong's classic gains its first English translation as 'Legends of the Condor Heroes'

Now…English readers can enjoy one of the most widely-read fantasy novels in China. “Legends of the Condor Heroes", written by well-known Chinese novelist Jin Yong, was published in its first English version on Thursday this week.
Yong was an editor for a Hong Kong newspaper when he began publishing his martial-arts themed fictions. The series sold over 300 million copies and is compared to “Lord of the Rings.” (People’s Daily app)
