China tightens management on elderly care institutions amid epidemic

Elderly care institutions in high-risk regions of novel coronavirus infection should suspend elderly people and staff from entering the facilities, according to a guideline issued by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday.

Newly admitted elderly people and those who need to return for particular reasons, as well as newly recruited staff, should be placed under quarantine for 14 days and given nucleic acid tests before entering the facilities.

The regulation also applies to elderly care institutions in other regions with confirmed infection cases, according to the ministry. (Xinhua)

Iran's deputy health minister tests positive for coronavirus infection

Iran's deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi said on Tuesday that he has tested positive for novel coronavirus infection. 

The spokesman for Iran's health ministry also confirmed that Harirchi has been infected and is now under quarantine in an interview with state television.

Iran reported 34 new COVID-19 cases and three more fatalities on Tuesday, according to the local health ministry. There are 95 confirmed cases in the country and 15 deaths. (CGTN)

Indian police issue shoot-at-sight orders as death toll reaches 13 in citizenship law-related violence

Indian police on Tuesday evening issued shoot-at-sight orders in affected areas in New Delhi, as communal violence over the controversial citizenship law intensifies in the capital, officials said.

As of Tuesday, the death toll from the violence had risen to 13. Over 180 people including policemen were injured.

The law aims at granting citizenship to illegal immigrants belonging to six religions - Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Parsi and Christianity - from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, it has kept out Muslim immigrants from applying for citizenship.  (Xinhua)

14 of world's 20 most polluted cities in India

A new report monitoring pollution in the world revealed that 14 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are in India.

The 2019 World Air Quality Report published on Tuesday by IQAir AirVisual showed that Ghaziabad topped the charts of most polluted cities in 2019. It had an annual average PM 2.5 concentration of 110.2.

Delhi, the capital city of India, is the most polluted capital city in the world, with PM 2.5 concentration of 98.6. (Xinhua)

Paramount halts 'Mission: Impossible' shoot over coronavirus

Paramount Pictures on Monday halted production on the seventh "Mission: Impossible" film due to the coronavirus outbreak in Italy.

"Mission: Impossible 7" had been scheduled to shoot for three weeks in Venice. 

In a statement, Paramount cited the Venetian government's halting of public gatherings, and said it was canceling the shoot "out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of our cast and crew." (AP)

World's oldest man dies in Japan at 112

A Japanese man recently named the world's oldest living male has died aged 112, a local official said Tuesday.

Chitetsu Watanabe, who was born on March 5, 1907 in Niigata, north of Tokyo, died on Sunday at his nursing home in the same prefecture, the official said.

The news came less than two weeks after he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records.

The oldest living person is also Japanese, Kane Tanaka, a 117-year-old woman. (CGTN)

China unveils 26-man squad for FIFA World Cup qualifiers

The Chinese Football Association has announced the 26-man squad for the men's national team and the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.  

Star forward Wu Lei, who plays for La Liga's Espanyol, is the only listed player from one of the top five major European leagues.  

Coach Li Tie, who was appointed to succeed Italian Marcello Lippi in January, will lead the team in his first two World Cup qualifiers on March 26 and March 31 against the Maldives and Guam. (CGTN)
