The US on Wednesday conducted its first airstrike against Taliban forces in Afghanistan, a military spokesman said, days after signing an ambitious peace deal with the militant group in the Mideastern state of Qatar.

US military spokesman Col. Sonny Leggett tweeted that the "defensive" strike was the first US attack against the militants in 11 days. He said the attack was to counter a Taliban assault on Afghan government forces in Nahr-e Saraj in the southern Helmand province.

Leggett added that Taliban forces had conducted 43 attacks on Afghan troops on Tuesday in Helmand. (AP)

Los Angeles County officials Wednesday declared a local public health emergency with 6 new cases of coronavirus being identified in the last 48 hours.

The county's Supervisor Kathryn Barger said at a press conference joined by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti that the move was taken "out of abundance of caution" instead of "a response rooted in panic."

LA Public Health said the 6 new cases were not due to community spread, but an assumed “known exposure” or “close contact.” (People's Daily app-Xinhua)

Dublin-based architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara won the Pritzker Architecture Prize 2020, which was announced on Tuesday. They are the first female duo, and the first architects from Ireland to win the award.

The pair "have consistently and unhesitatingly pursued the highest quality of architecture for the specific location in which it was to be built, the functions it would house and especially for the people who would inhabit and use their buildings and spaces," the jury's citation said.

The prize, often considered as the highest honor in architecture, is sponsored by Chicago's billionaire Pritzker family. Launched in 1979, it's been given annually to recognize contributions to humanity through the art of architecture ever since. (CGTN)
