Death toll rises to 10 after hotel collapses in east China

The death toll has risen to 10 as of 4:00 pm Sunday after a hotel building collapsed in east China's Fujian Province on Saturday, local authorities said.

Forty-eight people had been rescued while 23 others remain trapped.

The Xinjia Hotel collapsed at around 7:00 pm in Quanzhou’s Licheng District, trapping 71 people.

A preliminary investigation showed the hotel building was being decorated when the accident occurred, and the owner of the building has been put under police control. (Xinhua)

Portuguese president to be quarantined for two weeks: statement

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be quarantined at his private residence for two weeks, according to a statement published on the presidential website on Sunday.

The president received a group of students from a school in northern Portugal at a recent event and took photos with them.

After a student was confirmed on Saturday to be infected with COVID-19, his school was closed.

De Sousa accepted the home quarantine order issued by health authorities. (Xinhua)

US Army bans travel for soldiers, families to and from South Korea amid COVID-19

The US Army on Sunday banned travel for all soldiers and their families to and from South Korea, as the nation struggles with COVID-19.

"The Army's order is in effect immediately through May 6, 2020, or until further notice," US Force Korea said, advising those who have been affected should contact their chain of command for instructions.

The decision was announced a day after the US Army unveiled the same measures for troops stationed in Italy.  (People's Daily app)

Turkish president urges Greece to open border for illegal immigrants

Turkish President Recep Erdogan on Sunday urged Greece to open its borders for the passage of illegal immigrants, who have been waiting in Turkey's northwestern border for the last ten days to enter Europe.

"These people will not stay in Greece. They will transit to another European country from there," Erdogan said at a meeting in Istanbul, marking International Women's Day.

Turkish authorities claimed that a total of three refugees were shot dead by Greek police so far. (Xinhua)

Royal farewell: Harry, Meghan on final duty before new life

Great Barrier Reef enters crucial period in coral bleaching

The Great Barrier Reef is facing a critical period of heat stress over the coming weeks following the most widespread coral bleaching the natural wonder has ever endured, scientists said Friday.

David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority said ocean temperatures over the next month would be crucial to how the reef recovers from heat-induced bleaching.

The 345,400-square kilometer World Heritage-listed colorful coral network has been devastated by four coral bleaching events since 1998. The most deadly was the most recent, in consecutive summers in 2016 and 2017. (AP)

Judge rules Ronaldinho must remain in Paraguayan jail

Former Brazilian international Ronaldinho was ordered to remain in custody in Paraguay on Saturday after a judge ruled him a flight risk.

The ex-Barcelona forward was arrested on Friday for attempting to enter Paraguay with a false passport two days earlier and spent Friday night in a police cell along with his brother and business manager Roberto Assis.

Judge Clara Ruiz Diaz said their alleged offense was a "serious one against the interests of the Paraguayan state." (CGTN)
