Asymptomatic patients of COVID-19 to be reported daily starting April 1

China's National Health Commission (NHC) will publish the reports, classification and condition of asymptomatic patients of COVID-19 in its daily briefing to answer social concerns, starting Wednesday, said Chang Jile, director of the Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control of the NHC in Wuhan on Tuesday.

There were 1,541 asymptomatic patients of COVID-19 under observation as of Monday, among which 205 are imported cases.

Asymptomatic patients refer to those who do not show any symptoms, including fever and cough, but test positive. (People's Daily app)

China's national college entrance exam postponed by a month

China's national college entrance exam, also known as Gaokao, will be postponed by one month to July 7 and 8 due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Tuesday.

Hubei Province, which was hit hard by the virus, and Beijing can put forward their proposals on the exam dates for their regions and publish the schedule after consulting and gaining approval from the MOE, according to an MOE statement. (Xinhua)

COVID-19 deaths continue to climb in NY

More than 300 New Yorkers died from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a somber-sounding Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday as temporary hospital beds were made available to help relieve the stress on city hospitals inundated with virus patients.

City officials announced Tuesday that 250 more ambulances and 500 paramedics and EMTs are headed to New York to help manage record numbers of calls for assistance.

Deaths from the coronavirus continued to climb steeply in New York, topping 1,500 by Tuesday, according to Cuomo.

The news is certain to get worse in New York City as the outbreak is expected to peak in the next month, the governor said. (AP)

US consumer confidence sinks as virus begins having impact

US consumer confidence tumbled this month to its lowest level in nearly three years as the impact of the coronavirus on the economy began to be felt.

The Conference Board reported Tuesday that its confidence index dropped to a reading of 120 in March from February’s 132.6. It was the lowest reading since the index was at 117.3 in June 2017. Both a sub-index that covers consumers’ view of current business and job market conditions and another sub-index that covers expectations of future conditions fell in March. (AP)

Coronavirus claims over 12,000 lives in Italy

The coronavirus pandemic continued to advance in locked down Italy on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections to 77,635, according to the latest data released by the country's Civil Protection Department.

The death toll on Tuesday was 837, bringing the total to 12,428 fatalities since the pandemic first broke out in northern Italy on Feb. 21.

Speaking during a nightly televised press conference, Civil Protection Department Chief Angelo Borrelli confirmed that there are 2,107 new active coronavirus infections compared to Monday. (Xinhua)

US finds major cross-border tunnel used to smuggle drugs

A large haul of drugs, including opioids, methamphetamine and cocaine, being smuggled from Mexico to California was seized from a cross-border tunnel equipped with ventilation, lighting and an underground rail system, authorities said Tuesday.

The tunnel connected warehouses in Tijuana and San Diego, extending about 610 meters with an average depth of 9.5 meters and width of 0.9 meter, according to the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, an investigative team made up of several federal agencies. 

Authorities seized more than two tons of a variety of drugs, a departure from earlier discoveries that consisted largely of marijuana. (AP)
