Xi meets with Myanmar's commander-in-chief of defense services

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Wednesday.

China attaches great importance to China-Myanmar relations, Xi said, noting that no matter how the international situation changes, China is willing as always to strengthen strategic communication with Myanmar, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and constantly enrich the China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, so as to bring more tangible benefits to the two peoples and contribute joint efforts to regional stability and prosperity.

The armed forces of the two countries should deepen practical exchanges and cooperation, and work together to build a military-to-military relationship based on mutual trust and benefit and devoted to safeguarding the common security and development interests of the two countries, Xi said. China willing to enhance parliamentary exchanges with Croatia

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday that China is willing to enhance parliamentary exchanges with Croatia to further consolidate public support for the China-Croatia relationship and promote bilateral cooperation.

Li made the remarks when meeting with Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic, adding that cooperation between the two countries' legislative bodies is an important component of bilateral relations.

Noting that China and Croatia share a long-term friendship, Li said: "We would like to, on the basis of respecting each other's core interests and major concerns, continuously enlarge the scale of bilateral trade, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen mutual learning in areas such as sports, and deepen friendship between the two peoples, so as to promote bilateral relations to achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes."

For his part, Jandrokovic said Li's visit is a trip of friendship and cooperation, and China is Croatia's great partner as well as a friend during the country's development. (Xinhua) 

The first photo of a black hole unveiled

The 1st-ever black hole photo, a groundbreaking collaboration of over 200 scientists from across the globe, is unveiled at six press conferences on Wednesday.

The image of the black hole, based on observations through the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a planet-scale array of eight ground-based radio telescopes forged through international collaboration, was unveiled in coordinated press conferences across the globe at 9:00 pm (Beijing time).

Chinese astronomers have made contributions to a global effort to capture the first-ever image of a supermassive black hole at the heart of the distant galaxy M87. (People's Daily app) 

796 cultural artifacts returned by Italian authorities arrive in Beijing

A total of 796 Chinese cultural relics and artworks returned by Italy arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press briefing on Wednesday, "We are glad to see these cultural relics which bear the memories of the Chinese people finally come home."

China highly appreciates Italy's returning these relics, which also sets an example for international cooperation on searching for and returning looted cultural relics. (Global Times) 

Japan Olympic minister steps down after gaffes

Japan's minister in charge of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics stepped down on Wednesday after the latest in a series of gaffes.

The resignation comes less than 500 days before Tokyo hosts the Games, and follows a decision by the head of Japan's Olympic Committee to step down as French authorities investigate him.

The resignation comes after Sakurada said at a gathering of a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party from the disaster-hit northern region that the lawmaker was more important than the recovery of the region, according to the public broadcaster NHK. (AFP) 

London Eye to be red, white and blue when royal baby born

Special plans are being made to welcome the first child of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

Officials said Wednesday that the landmark London Eye observation wheel on the banks of the River Thames will be lit in red, white and blue to mark the baby’s birth.

The baby will be seventh in line for the British throne. (AP) 

8,000 Wuhan takeaway delivery drivers trained to be first-aiders

Besides food and medicine, residents living in central China's Wuhan City will soon be able to "order" first aid via their cellphones.

Nearly 8,000 takeaway delivery drivers in the city's Wuchang District will receive proper training to provide emergency services to local residents, the district's health bureau said during the World Health Expo, which is going on in Wuhan this week.

After receiving the training, the 8,000 delivery men will obtain a certificate, the bureau said, adding that the emergency service will also be incorporated into Eleme, a leading takeaway-ordering app in China. (Xinhua)
