US President Donald Trump tweeted late Monday that he would sign an executive order “to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States” because of the coronavirus.

He offered no details about which immigration programs might be affected by the order, and by Tuesday afternoon, the White House had yet to release any details on its contents or timing.

Much of the US immigration system has already ground to a halt because of the pandemic. Almost all visa processing by the State Department has been suspended for weeks. Travel to the US has been restricted from much of the globe, including China, Europe, Mexico and Canada. (AP)

Pandemic is dealing European tourism ‘staggering’ blow

The European Union says its vaunted tourist industry is facing “staggering” figures of decline because of the coronavirus crisis and the bloc’s internal market commissioner Thierry Breton wants the sector to be first in line when it comes to recovery funds.

Across Europe, desolation illustrates the tourism crisis, from empty squares like the Brussels Grand Place to deserted monuments like Rome’s Colosseum while idle gondolas await non-existent tourists in Venice.

Breton mentioned figures that the tourism industry could slump up to 70 percent and will be among the last to recover as the 27-nation bloc is facing perhaps the toughest challenge since its inception. (AP)

SWAB.jpeg

US health regulators on Tuesday OK’d the first coronavirus test that allows people to collect their own sample at home, a new approach that could help expand testing options in most states.

For the home test, people are initially screened with an online questionnaire. If authorized by a physician, LabCorp will ship a testing kit to their home. The test results are posted online to a secure company website.

The company said it will make the test available in the coming weeks. Each kit will cost $119. The kits will not be available in states with laws prohibiting testing with at-home kits. (AP)
