Xi leads national mourning for lives lost to COVID-19

Xi Jinping led other Chinese leaders on Saturday to attend national mourning for martyrs who died fighting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and compatriots who lost their lives in the outbreak.

Xi, Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji, Han Zheng and Wang Qishan, as well as other Party and state leaders, stood in silence in the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing. The commemoration lasted for three minutes.

In Beijing, flags were lowered to half-staff from Tian'anmen Square to the compounds of the central leadership organs of the Party, national legislature, central government, national political advisory body, military, top court and top procuratorate.

A moment of silence was observed by the public across the country. Air raid sirens blared. Cars, trains and ships honked horns. (Xinhua)

New York state governor says 1,000 ventilators coming from China

A donation of 1,000 ventilators will arrive in New York City on Saturday from China, said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The donation is a timely assistance for the state fighting at the epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic, which will run out of ventilators in less than a week, according to Cuomo.

The state had reported 113,704 COVID-19 cases and 3,565 related fatalities by Saturday morning. (Xinhua)

Canada not to retaliate after US bans mask export: Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday that his government will not take retaliatory measures against the United States after President Donald Trump ordered 3M company not to export N95 masks to Canada.

He said that he will speak with Trump in the coming days to protect the flow of goods across the border and he is confident they will be able to find a solution.

On Friday, Minnesota-based company 3M revealed the Trump administration had ordered them to cease exporting N95 masks to Canada and Latin American countries. (Xinhua)

Another cruise ship with virus victims docking in Florida

Another cruise ship with coronavirus victims on board, including two fatalities, is docking in Florida.

Princess Cruises spokeswoman Negin Kamali said in an email Saturday the Coral Princess ship is docking in Miami. As of Thursday, seven passengers and five crew members had tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Coral Princess had been on a South American cruise that was due to end March 19 in Buenos Aires. Since then, the ship has encountered obstacles to docking because of various port closures and cancellation of airline flights, the cruise line said. (AP)

Corona beer producer halts brewing over virus

The Mexican brewer of Corona beer said it was suspending production because of the health emergency in the country over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grupo Modelo said the measure was in line with the Mexican government's order to suspend all non-essential activities until April 30 to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Since the start of the virus crisis, Corona beer has been the punchline of jokes and memes, and an online rumor said sales in the US dropped by around 40 percent after the outbreak. (AFP)

Knifeman in southern France kills 2 in attack on passersby

A man wielding a knife attacked residents of a French town while they ventured out to shop amid a coronavirus lockdown Saturday, killing two people and wounding eight others, authorities said.

Police later arrested the assailant nearby, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said authorities were studying whether to qualify the attack in the town of Romans-sur-Isere as an act of terrorism.

Prosecutors did not identify the suspect. They said he had no identifying documents but claimed to be Sudanese. (AP)

Kobe, Duncan, Garnett headline Basketball Hall of Fame class

The 2020 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has been unveiled and it's a transcendent one, headlined by Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett. In addition to those NBA legends, WNBA champion and 10-time All-Star Tamika Catchings will also be enshrined.

The trio of Bryant, Duncan and Garnett combined to win 11 NBA championships and four MVP awards across their decorated careers. (AP)
