127th Canton Fair exempts exhibition fees for enterprises

The 127th session of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, will exempt exhibition fees for enterprises, according to China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC).

Exhibition fees will be waived to cope with the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic and help foreign trade enterprises to expand market and tide over difficulties, said the MOC.

The cross-border e-commerce platforms that participate in the fair-related activities will also be exempted from fees. (Xinhua)

Russia's confirmed COVID-19 cases top 200,000

The number of people infected with COVID-19 in Russia has exceeded 200,000, according to data from an official website set up by the country's health authorities.

The number of cases increased to 209,688 after another 11,012 tests came back positive in the last 24 hours, yet the total number of fatalities remains low at 1,915.

The trend will likely make the number of Russia's confirmed cases the biggest in Europe within days. (AFP)

UK’s Johnson announces modest easing of lockdown

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a modest easing of the country’s coronavirus lockdown Sunday and outlined his government’s road map for further lifting restrictions in the coming months.

In a televised address to the nation, Johnson said people in Britain who can’t work from home, such as those in construction or manufacturing, “should be actively encouraged to go to work” this week.

He said that starting Wednesday, a restriction limiting outdoor exercise to once a day will be lifted and that people will be able to take “unlimited amounts.” (AP)

New York to require virus testing for nursing home personnel

New York nursing homes must start bi-weekly COVID-19 testing for all employees, and will no longer be sent infected patients leaving hospitals, as residents are being tested as much as possible, said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday amid criticism over the handling of outbreaks at nursing homes. 

Of the nation’s more than 26,000 COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, 20 percent — over 5,200 — are in New York, according to the Associated Press. (AP)

Musk threatens to exit California over virus restrictions

Tesla CEO Elon Musk threatened Saturday to pull the company’s factory and headquarters out of California and sue local officials who have stopped the company from reopening its electric vehicle factory.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Tesla accused the Alameda County Health Department of overstepping federal and state coronavirus restrictions when it stopped Tesla from restarting production at its factory in Fremont. 

“Frankly, this is the final straw,” Musk tweeted. “Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately.” (AP)

Flower business withers on Mother's Day amid global pandemic

Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, is usually a good day for flower growers and florists worldwide because flowers sell best on this day.

While the COVID-19 outbreak has not dampened demand for flowers on Mother's Day, it has hampered supplies due to insufficient logistics.

The Netherlands, Europe's largest flower supplier, struggled to cope with Mother's Day this year as many flowers died before they arrived at their destinations. 

In Kenya, the second-largest flower supplier, inbound and outbound passenger flights were canceled due to a travel ban in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. (CGTN)

China's Palace Museum to raise daily visitor cap to 8,000

China's Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, will welcome more visitors starting next Tuesday as its daily cap on visitor numbers will increase from 5,000 to 8,000, according to a recent notice.

Visitors will still need to make reservations online, wear face masks, and have their body temperatures checked before entering, according to the notice.

The year 2020 marks the 600th anniversary of the Forbidden City. (Xinhua)
