China's national legislature started its annual session Friday morning in Beijing.

10 European nations regret US pulling out Open Skies Treaty
Ten European nations on Friday issued a joint statement regretting the US' withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty, which they consider a "crucial element of the confidence-building framework that has been created over the past decades to increase transparency and security across the Euro-Atlantic area."
"We regret the announcement by the government of the United States of its intention to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty, although we share its concerns regarding the implementation of treaty provisions by Russia," said the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Sweden in the statement. Malaysian PM quarantined after chairing meeting involving official tested COVID-19 positive
Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will observe a 14-day home quarantine after an official who attended a post-cabinet meeting that he chaired on May 20 tested positive for COVID-19, the Prime Minister's office said in a statement on Friday.
The officials who attended the meeting have been ordered to undergo testing and to observe home quarantine for 14 days, the statement also said. (Xinhua)
At least 50 killed in passenger plane crash in Pakistan's Karachi
A jetliner carrying 98 people crashed Friday in a crowded neighborhood near the airport in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi after an apparent engine failure during landing. Officials said there were at least 50 killed, and seven injured people have been recovered and shifted to two hospitals.
Rescuers found at least three survivors from the plane, and it was unknown how many people on the ground were hurt, with at least five houses destroyed.
The pilot of Pakistani International Airlines Flight 8303 was heard transmitting a mayday to the tower shortly before the crash of the Airbus A320, which was flying from Lahore to Karachi. (AP-Xinhua)
Oxford expands virus vaccine trial to wider population
Oxford University is recruiting thousands of volunteers for the next phase of human trials for a coronavirus vaccine that is "progressing very well," health officials said on Friday.
The university, in South Central England, began initial trials in April, administering more than 1,000 immunizations, with follow-up currently ongoing, it added.
"We are now initiating studies to evaluate how well the vaccine induces immune responses in older adults, and to test whether it can provide protection for the wider population," said the statement. (AFP)
Olympics official sees 'real problems' in holding Games in 2021
A senior Olympics official has warned that holding the postponed Tokyo Games next year faces "real problems," with even a vaccine unlikely to stave off the threat of the coronavirus.
John Coates, the International Olympic Committee's point man for Tokyo 2020, indicated that officials would start deciding in October if and how the pandemic-hit Games could go ahead in July 2021.
Without the safety net of a widely available vaccine, there could be enormous challenges in screening tens of thousands of people from all corners of the world, Coates said. (AFP)
Multilingual data terminology encyclopedia launched online
Publisher Science Press announced on Monday the publication of the encyclopedia "Big Data Terminology," the world's first multilingual encyclopedia on big data.
The book, compiled by the Big Data Strategy Laboratory, contains the wisdom of dozens of professional institutions and hundreds of scholars at home and abroad. It will be distributed globally.
The book covers nine terminology frameworks on big data, including the basics, strategy, technology, economy, finance, governance, standards, security, and law, said Lian Yuming, the book's chief editor and director of the Big Data Strategy Laboratory. (Xinhua)
