New coronavirus infections low in much of Italy

Italy on Saturday registered 669 new cases of COVID-19, two-thirds of them in the northern region of Lombardy, which has been the hardest-hit since the outbreak began.

All of Italy’s regions, with the exception of Lombardy, registered no more than a few dozen new cases each on Saturday, and many regions had numbers of new infections in the single digits.

Italy eased many stay-at-home restrictions on May 18, including allowing public Masses to be held and restaurants and cafes to serve sit-down customers. (AP)

US discussed holding first nuclear test in decades

US President Donald Trump's administration has discussed holding the first US nuclear test since 1992, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, told the newspaper that if it were to go ahead it would be seen as the "starting gun to an unprecedented nuclear arms race."

The report, citing one senior administration official and two former officials, all who spoke anonymously, said the discussion had taken place at a meeting on May 15.

The meeting did not conclude with any agreement, said the sources. (CGTN)

97 dead, two survivors in Pakistan plane crash

All but two of the 99 people on board a Pakistan passenger plane were killed when it crashed into a residential neighborhood of Karachi, officials said Saturday.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane had made multiple approaches to land at Karachi airport on Friday when it came down among houses, sparking a rescue operation that lasted into the night.

Meeran Yousaf, the provincial Health Department spokeswoman, said eight people on the ground were injured. (AFP)

China's homegrown amphibious aircraft to conduct first maritime takeoff

China's independently-developed large amphibious aircraft AG600, codenamed Kunlong, will carry out a maiden test flight at sea off the coastal city of Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, in the second half of this year, according to its developer the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) on Saturday.

The aircraft, designed to be the world's largest of its kind, completed its maiden flight over land in December 2017 and the first water takeoff the next October.

Featuring long-range flight capability, the AG600 aircraft is the first of its kind developed by China to meet the country's demand for forest fire fighting and water rescue. (Xinhua)

Amazon to hire 50,000 temporary workers in India

Following the relaxation in norms allowing e-commerce companies to resume deliveries, Amazon's Indian subsidiary is on a hiring spree for 50,000 temporary workers to meet a surge in online shopping in the country.

After close to two months of nation-wide lockdown and curbs on shopping malls and retail outlets being still prevalent due to rising cases of COVID-19, the Indian government last week allowed the resumption of e-commerce activities for both essential and non-essential deliveries across the country.

Associates will be deployed across Amazon India's fulfilment and delivery network to assist workers to pick, pack, ship and deliver customers' orders placed for sellers more efficiently. (Xinhua)

Messi’s back: Spanish soccer league set to resume in June

Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and the rest of the Spanish league can resume play in June after three months of waiting for the coronavirus pandemic to subside.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced Saturday that the nation’s wildly popular La Liga and other professional sports competitions will be allowed to resume from June 8, providing Spain keeps its coronavirus outbreak in check.

Osaka becomes world's highest-earning female athlete

Japan's Naomi Osaka has passed Serena Williams of the US as the world's highest-paid female athlete, according to Forbes. 

The 22-year-old two-time Grand Slam champion earned $1.4 million more than Williams who topped the list before her for four consecutive years.

Osaka earned a total of $37.4 million in prize money and endorsements over the last year, ranking 29th on Forbes' annual list of the 100 top-earning athletes due to be released next week. (CGTN)
