Chinese President Xi Jinping has encouraged young Chinese to hold firm convictions, stick to people's stance and develop genuine skills to devote themselves to the cause of building a great country.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the statement on Sunday when sending greetings to young people across the country ahead of China's Youth Day, which falls on May 4.

The year 2020 is the critical year for securing a decisive victory in the fight to eradicate absolute poverty and building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, Xi noted, adding that it also marks the convergence of the timeframes of the two centenary goals.

He called on youngsters to pass on the May Fourth spirit, always work hard and forge ahead with their fellow Chinese along the new long march to realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation. (Xinhua)

A northern California city official was ousted after he claimed on social media that sick, old, and homeless people should be left to meet their "natural course in nature" during the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported.

City council members in Antioch voted unanimously Friday night via Zoom to relieve Ken Turnage II from his duties as the city’s planning commissioner due to his unacceptable comments.

"The world has been introduced to a new phrase Herd Immunity which is a good one. In my opinion we need to adapt a Herd Mentality. A herd gathers its ranks, it allows the sick, the old, the injured to meet its natural course in nature," Turnage said on Facebook. (Xinhua)

Six months ago, the global tourism industry was celebrating a record year for travel. Now, it’s decimated and facing a recovery that could take years.

Tourism Economics, a data and consulting firm, predicts global travel demand won’t resume its normal pace until 2023.

Millions of people who depend on tourism have been laid off or furloughed.

In the US, an estimated 8 million tourism-related employees are jobless, or about one-third of the total US unemployment rate, said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the US Travel Association. (AP)
