Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed the need to enhance the political loyalty of the country's police force, strengthen them through reform and technology, and run them with strict discipline, at a national conference on public security.

Chinese police must fulfill the duties and tasks of the new era entrusted to them by the Party and the people, said Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

The police should ensure the people have a stronger sense of security and create a safe and stable political and social environment to secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, deliver on the two centenary goals and realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation, Xi added.

The meeting was held in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday. (Xinhua)

Britain's May stands VCG.jpg

British Prime Minister Theresa May stands by her commitment to resign after she completes "phase one" of the Brexit process to open the way for a new leader to negotiate the second phase, her spokesman said on Wednesday.

May is under growing pressure to leave office sooner than she plans, with many in her governing Conservatives saying she has failed to deliver Britain's vote to leave the European Union and that the party now has to take a new approach.

Britain's opposition Labour Party, on the other hand, will look to nail down in the next few days whether and how far the government is willing to move in talks over a way forward on Brexit, a Labour Party spokesman said after suffering defeat in UK local elections. (CGTN)
