Hua Chunying, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed hope and support for efforts by North Korea and the US to meet each other halfway during their upcoming summit.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore as originally scheduled after several setbacks.

Hua reiterated that the current situation on the Korean Peninsula is at a rare historical juncture. The summit between North Korea and the US is crucial to denuclearization and lasting peace on the peninsula. (Xinhua – People’s Daily app)

US commerce secretary in Beijing for trade consultations

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was seen at Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guest House on Saturday afternoon, during his three-day trip to continue consultations with China on economic and trade issues.

Ross had informal consultations with Chinese officials in the afternoon and will have official talks with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on Sunday.

Liu is the chief of the Chinese side of the China-US comprehensive economic dialogue and is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. (CGTN – People’s Daily app)

China issues blacklists for airline, railway violators

China issued its first blacklists for violators of airline and railway safety rules on Friday to ensure safety and discourage future troublemakers.

The list is based on punishments issued by police around the country. Some of the individuals on the lists were carrying banned items including replica firearms, knives, and lighters. Others were banned for using fake IDs, obstructing security checks, and disrupting safety procedures.

Zhang Xiulan, a professor of social development and public policy at Beijing Normal University, said the blacklists are necessary to uphold social morality, ethics and honesty. (China Daily – People’s Daily app)

China sets up new remote sensing satellite

China launched the Gaofen-6, a new remote sensing Earth observation satellite on Saturday. It will be used mainly for agricultural resource monitoring, research, and disaster management.

Gaofen-6 took off on a Long March-2D rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. An experimental satellite, called Luojia-1, was also sent into the orbit on the same rocket.

The mission marks the 276th launch of the Long March rocket series. (People’s Daily app)

Pedro Sanchez sworn in as Spain’s prime minister

Spain's Socialist chief Pedro Sanchez was sworn in as the country’s prime minister on Saturday, a day after ousting Mariano Rajoy in a historic no-confidence vote due to a massive corruption scandal.

Sanchez, a 46-year-old economist with no government experience, took the oath of office before King Felipe VI in the Zarzuela Palace near Madrid. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

Sisi sworn in as Egypt’s president for second term

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in on Saturday for his second term as leader of Egypt until 2022, state-run Nile TV reported.

In a ceremony held in the parliament, Sisi took the oath as president with the words: "I swear by God to protect the republican system, to respect the constitution and the law, to safeguard the people's interests, and to preserve the independence of the nation and the unity of lands." Adidas takes lead over Nike in World Cup shirt deals

Adidas can declare itself the winner over arch rival Nike in the upcoming World Cup, since the popular German clothing brand will be providing shirts for most of the teams at the event.

Adidas, which is also the official sponsor of the tournament, has supplied the World Cup match ball since 1970 and has a deal to sponsor the event until 2030.

The two sports apparel brands have been in fierce competition for sponsoring World Cup teams since the 1990s. This year, Adidas will be sponsoring 12 teams, including Germany and Spain, while Nike sponsors 10 teams including Brazil, France, and England. (Reuters – People’s Daily app)

China defeats Thailand in friendly football match

China defeated Thailand 2-0 in Bangkok on Saturday thanks to striker Wu Lei’s efforts, which helped the team make up for a 5-1 loss against Thailand in 2013.

Shanghai SIPG forward Wu scored his first goal in the 34th minute before netting his second goal in the 73rd minute of the match.
