Xi sends congratulatory letter to Global Health Forum of Boao Forum for Asia

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the opening of the Global Health Forum of Boao Forum for Asia.

The forum opened Tuesday in the city of Qingdao, eastern China's Shandong Province.

Noting that good health for everyone is the common aspiration of mankind and a key part of the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, Xi said advancing the global health cause is also important in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Xi said the forum is an important effort in promoting the common development and people's well-being in Asia and around the world, to which the Boao Forum for Asia has been committed. (Xinhua) 

Yao Ming elected as FIBA Asia Chairman

Former NBA star Yao Ming has been elected chairman of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia at the General Assembly in Bengaluru in India.

Yao is the third Chinese to take up the role after Xin Lancheng and Li Yuanwei since 2002.

38-year-old Yao, who played for the Houston Rockets between 2002 and 2011 and was an eight-time NBA All-Star, is now chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association. (CGTN) 

Airbus Tianjin final assembly line to ramp up to 6 A320s per month by 2020

Airbus is expected to ramp up the production rate of the A320 Final Assembly Line Asia (FALA) in northern China's Tianjin to six airplanes per month by early 2020, according to Airbus China Tuesday.

The Airbus A320 FALA in Tianjin is now capable of conducting the final assembly of the A320 family single-aisle airplanes, including the latest model A320neo, Airbus China said.

It is the third single-aisle aircraft final assembly line location of Airbus and first outside Europe. (Xinhua) 

US submits extradition request for WikiLeaks founder Assange

The United States government has formally submitted an extradition request to the United Kingdom for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, a US official said Tuesday.

Assange faces an 18-count indictment that accuses him of soliciting and publishing classified information and of conspiring with former Army private Chelsea Manning to crack a Defense Department computer password.

The extradition request had been expected ever since US authorities first announced a criminal case against Assange. (AP) 

Sunken Danube tour boat is raised in Hungary, 4 bodies found

Rescue crews raised a sunken tour boat out of the Danube River on Tuesday, shortly after four more bodies were recovered from the vessel involved in a collision with a river cruise ship nearly two weeks ago.

Nineteen South Koreans and a Hungarian crewman have been confirmed dead, with eight people still listed as missing.

Police spokesman Kristof Gal said although it was not yet officially confirmed, the Hungarian captain and a young South Korean girl are believed to be among the four bodies taken off the boat after it was raised to the surface.

Gal said the tour boat would be taken by barge to nearby Csepel Island, where it will be examined by Budapest police as part of their investigation of the crash. (AP) 

World stamp exhibition opens in central China

The 2019 FIP General World Stamp Exhibition opened Tuesday in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, featuring some of the country's rarest stamps.

The exhibition will showcase over 1,300 sets and 4,500 stamps the People's Republic of China has issued since its founding 70 years ago.

The event has attracted stamp organizations from 84 countries and regions. (Xinhua) 

China beats Tajikistan in soccer friendly

Yang Xu scored the only goal as China beat Tajikistan 1-0 in an international friendly match on Tuesday.

Yang scored in the 10th minute following Wang Gang's cross from the right side. But he was later injured and was substituted by Zhang Yuning in the 30th minute.

Tajikistan tried to find the equalizer but Murammadjon Rahimov's shot was saved by keeper Wang Dalei. China dominated after the hour mark, only to see Zhang, Xie Pengfei and Hao Junmin's attempts all being off target. (Xinhua)
