Trump, Kim sign joint document after historic summit

US President Donald Trump signed a document with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their historic summit in Singapore, where Kim committed to "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

In the joint statement, North Korea and the US said they would commit to establishing a new relationship, and that North Korea would work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Both sides said they are committed to jointly building a lasting and stable peace regime on the peninsula, and to recovering the remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Korean War.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday called the summit between Kim and Trump a “success.” (Xinhua - People’s Daily app)

China welcomes North Korea-US summit achievements

China welcomes and supports the achievements of the meeting between the leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United States, according to a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement Tuesday.

The statement said the meeting yielded positive achievements, which was important progress in promoting denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the political settlement process.

“As a neighbor of the peninsula and an important party of the issue, China stands ready to work with other relevant parties toward denuclearization and the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula,” the statement said. (Xinhua)

Greek PM announces deal on Macedonian name dispute

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced on Tuesday that his country and the Republic Macedonia have reached a historic agreement over the sharing of the name Macedonia, Greek national broadcaster ERT reported.

The dispute over the name started in 1991, when part of former Yugoslavia declared independence and took the name the Republic of Macedonia. Greece objected to the name since it too has a region called Macedonia.

Greece’s prime minister said the deal met the concerns of both parties. One of the new names under discussion is Northern Macedonia. (Reuters – People’s Daily app)

Tian’anmen Rostrum to undergo renovation

The iconic Tian'anmen Rostrum in downtown Beijing will be closed starting on Friday through next April for renovations, Beijing Daily reported on Tuesday.

This year's work will focus on waterproofing, replacing pipelines and other outdated equipment, maintenance on cultural relics, and painting repairs.

Built in 1417, Tian'anmen has been an important venue for state ceremonies. It has attracted millions of visitors since it opened to the public in the 1980s. (China Daily – People’s Daily app)

German team lands at World Cup as Real Madrid announces new coach

Germany, the reigning World Cup champions, arrived in Russia on Tuesday before the start of the international football tournament as Real Madrid announced Julen Lopetegui as its new coach.

The Germans are favorites in the tournament alongside Spain, France, and Brazil. Germany’s first match will be against Mexico on Sunday.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will start on June 14 and run through July 15. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

Florida gunman kills self, 4 children during police standoff

A Florida man who barricaded himself inside an apartment in Orlando, where he killed four children, was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound police confirmed late Monday.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that law enforcement officers tried to bring the standoff to a peaceful conclusion, but unfortunately it was a "tragic and sad" ending.

Officers were called to the scene after a woman notified local police she had been beaten by her boyfriend, 35-year old Gary Lindsey Jr. Police said two of the children were Lindsey’s, and the other two belonged to his girlfriend. (People’s Daily app)

Mercedes-Benz, Maserati issue recall in China

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz and Italian luxury car manufacturer Maserati will recall nearly 8,000 imported automobiles in China, the General Administration of Customs said on Tuesday.

Starting June 12, Mercedes-Benz will issue recalls for more than 7,800 of its GLS SUV, S, and AMG GT vehicles due to defective door locks and faulty seatbelts.

Due to a defective front subframe, Maserati will recall 67 automobiles. (Xinhua – People’s Daily app)

UK to offer Stephen Hawking fellowships

Exceptional students in mathematics and physics can compete for research fellowships in honor of the late British physicist Stephen Hawking, who died in March, the government announced on Monday.

Up to 10 fellowships will be awarded each year for the next five years to candidates completing doctoral studies in math, physics, and computer sciences, according to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Hawking's children Robert, Lucy and Tim Hawking, said they were "thrilled" by the announcement and that their father "knew the value that fellowships could provide to advancing research.” (AFP – People’s Daily app)
