Chinese president calls for closer SCO community with shared future

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to build a closer community with a shared future for the group.

While addressing the 19th SCO summit in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, Xi noted that since the summit in China's eastern port city of Qingdao last year, all members, following the Shanghai Spirit, have facilitated a deeper and more practical all-round cooperation, and boosted fresh development for the SCO from a new starting point.

In the speech, he said that peace, development, cooperation and win-win approach remain the irreversible trend of the times despite a changing international landscape.

He urged the SCO members to have a keen appreciation of the trend toward world multi-polarization and economic globalization, search for wisdom in the Shanghai Spirit and draw strength from unity and cooperation so as to build a closer community with a shared future for the organization. (Xinhua) 

China launches investigation into FedEx

China's relevant government department has started an investigation into FedEx, delivering a notice of inquiry to FedEx China on Friday.

The relevant government department notified FedEx of the inquiry to uncover the truth in a more in-depth and comprehensive way, Yin Shaocheng, an associate professor with the Capital University of Economics and Business said.

On June 1, China's relevant government department announced the decision to file a case for investigation of FedEx on suspicion of undermining the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese clients. (Xinhua) 

Iran sends experts to examine status of damaged vessel in Sea of Oman

Iran has sent a team of experts to evaluate the status of one of the oil tankers involved in an incident on Thursday in the Sea of Oman, Tasnim news agency reported on Friday.

The experts would examine the vessel to see whether the rescued crew can return to it, an Iranian official said.

On Thursday morning, two oil tankers were hit in the Sea of Oman.

Iran said that it had rescued the crew of the two vessels and transferred them to the Iranian port city of Jask. (Xinhua) 

Man accused in New Zealand mosque killings pleads not guilty

The man accused of the New Zealand mosque attacks smirked as his lawyer entered not guilty pleas to terrorism, murder and attempted murder charges in the Christchurch High Court Friday.

Brenton Tarrant, the 28-year-old Australian accused of the attacks, appeared at the hearing via video link from a small room at the maximum security prison in Auckland where he's being held. The link was muted and he didn't attempt to speak.

Tarrant has been charged with 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one terrorism charge in relation to the March 15 shootings. (AP) 

China to select 2,000 schools for inheritance of fine traditional culture

China is looking to select around 2,000 schools for the inheritance of fine traditional Chinese culture in 2019, according to a circular made public by the Ministry of Education (MOE) Friday.

The inheritance mainly focuses on traditional folk music, arts, dance, opera, calligraphy, crafts and sports of ethnic groups of China.

The selection aims to fully integrate fine traditional Chinese culture into education at schools and guiding the country's youth to absorb Chinese wisdom, promote Chinese spirit and spread Chinese values, the circular reads. (Xinhua) 

Brazil police question Neymar over alleged rape

Brazilian police have questioned soccer player Neymar for the first time over allegations he raped a woman he met through social media in a Paris hotel last month, charges he has denied.

Accompanied by a police escort, the world's most expensive footballer was driven to a Sao Paulo police station where security had been ramped up for his highly anticipated arrival.

Neymar's appearance comes after Brazilian police said they had filed a defamation suit against his rape accuser for insinuating the force was corrupt. (CGTN) 

Toronto Raptors beat Golden State to capture NBA title

The Toronto Raptors captured their first NBA crown on Thursday, beating Golden State 114-110 to become the first league champion from outside the United States.

Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 26 points while Kawhi Leonard and reserve Fred VanVleet each added 22 as Toronto won the best-of-seven series four games to two.

For Golden State, Klay Thompson scored 30 points to lead the Warriors, Andre Iguodala added 22 points, Steph Curry had 21 and Draymond Green contributed 11 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists. (AP)
