China launches anti-dumping probe into EPDM imports

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced Wednesday it will start an anti-dumping investigation into imported ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) products from the United States, the Republic of Korea and the European Union.

The investigation, which kicked off on Wednesday, should be concluded by June 19, 2020, and could, under special circumstances, be extended to December 19, 2020, according to the MOC. (Xinhua) 

Tsinghua, Peking earn record rankings in world universities list

A total of 12 Chinese academic institutions have been included in the global top 100 of the 16th edition of the QS World University Rankings, released on Wednesday by London-based higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

Tsinghua University is China's highest-ranked university on the list, rising to 16th from last year's 17th. Peking University rose eight places to reach 22nd place globally. Both universities have achieved their best rankings since the list was first published in 2004. (China Daily) 

Three Russians, one Ukrainian charged over MH17 crash

International investigators on Wednesday charged four people with murder over the 2014 shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board.

The Dutch-led team will prosecute three Russian nationals and another from Ukraine over the crash of the Malaysia Airlines plane, with international arrest warrants for the first suspects sent out on Wednesday, Wilbert Paulissen, chief constable of the Netherlands National Police, told a press conference. (CGTN) 

Saudi journalist Khashoggi victim of premeditated extrajudicial execution

A United Nations Special Rapporteur said in a report Wednesday that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was the victim of a premeditated extrajudicial execution, for which the State of Saudi Arabia is responsible.

The report says Khashoggi's killing was the result of elaborate planning involving extensive coordination and significant human and financial resources.

Investigators also determined that there was credible evidence, warranting further investigation of high-level Saudi officials' liability, including that of the Crown Prince.

Saudi Arabian minister of state for foreign affairs on Wednesday rejected the report. (Xinhua) 

Death toll due to heatwave in India's Bihar rises to 92

The death toll during the past four days due to a blistering heatwave that swept several places in India's eastern state of Bihar has risen to 92, local government officials said Wednesday.

The local government has issued an advisory for people in affected districts to remain inside houses during the day, drink plenty of fluids and restrict construction activities during the daytime.

The government has closed schools in the state until June 22 in the wake of the intense heat. (Xinhua) 

Researchers confirm earliest archaeological site on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

A karst cave in northwestern China has been confirmed as the earliest archaeological site ever discovered on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Chinese researchers announced at a press conference.

The study led by Chinese archaeologists showed that a piece of a human fossil found in the Baishiya Karst Cave in Xiahe County, Gansu Province, is believed to belong to the ancient Denisovans, who lived around 160,000 years ago.

The findings were published in the journal Nature in May. (CGTN) 

Game of Thrones director to shoot film on early Chinese immigrants in Gold Rush

Alan Taylor, director of "Game of Thrones," announced Tuesday at the ongoing Shanghai International Film Festival that his new film "Gold Mountain" would dig into American history and depict a piece of the story of early Chinese immigrants moving to America during the 1850s Gold Rush.

The film "Gold Mountain" will tell the story of a shrewd widow who helped smuggle an unruly Chinese girl into the US to enter into a fiercely violent world dominated by male chauvinism. Facing their life battle together, the two women finally establish a profound relationship.

The film shooting is scheduled to start in 2020. (Xinhua)
