Trump threatens 20 percent tariff on EU cars

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 20 percent tariff on all European Union-assembled cars coming into the US, a month after his administration launched an investigation into whether auto imports pose a national security threat.

“If these Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the US Build them here!” Trump wrote on Twitter Friday.

The US Department of Commerce aims to wrap up its national security investigation on auto industry imports by late July or August, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said Thursday.

Following Trump’s threat, European and US auto shares fell sharply with major losses in Germany, Italy, and on the Dow Jones US auto index. (Reuters – People’s Daily app)

EU imposes tariffs on US peanuts, motorcycles and whiskey

The European Union started enforcing tariffs Friday on US imports like peanuts, motorcycles, and whiskey, as part of its tit-for-tat levies.

The EU tariffs on $3.4 billion worth of US products are in retaliation for duties the Trump administration imposed on European steel and aluminum. The EU trade commissioner acknowledged that the EU targeted iconic US items to put political pressure on US President Donald Trump and senior US politicians.

Daniel Gros, director for Economy and Finance at the Center for European Policy Studies, said everyone stands to lose in a trade war, but the US has put itself in a worse position. (AP – People’s Daily app)

China to increase academic load in universities: official

China plans to reduce the academic load in middle and high schools but increase college academic requirements, according to the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

Harsher guidelines will also be imposed on college professors to ensure they are adhering to a strict code of ethics. China’s minister of education said that bottom-up efforts in education are required for overall improvement.

For years, China’s education system has been blamed for imposing high stress on middle and high school students while also lacking accountability at the university level. These reforms are meant to fix both problems. (People’s Daily app)

The reunion event was agreed upon by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on April 27, when the two leaders held their first summit at the border village of Panmunjom. (Xinhua - People’s Daily app)

Next week, Prince William will become the first member of Britain's royal family ever to make an official visit to both Israeli and Palestinian territories.

Britain governed the region under a League of Nations mandate for almost three decades until Israel's independence 70 years ago. It is still blamed by both sides for sowing the seeds of a conflict that continues to plague the area to this day.

According to Kensington Palace, the visit is of a “non-political nature.”

Prince William is scheduled to visit Amman, Israel, Yad Vashem, Ramallah, and Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

ABC orders ‘Roseanne’ spinoff, minus Roseanne Barr

ABC said Thursday it will air a Conner family sitcom without Roseanne Barr this fall.

In a statement issued by the show’s producer, Barr said she agreed to the settlement to save the jobs of 200 cast and crew members who were idled when “Roseanne” was canceled last month.

The revival of the hit sitcom “Roseanne” was swiftly axed by ABC after Barr posted a tweet likening former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to a product of the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes.”

ABC said that the new series, with “The Conners” as its working title, will star John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman. (AP – People’s Daily app)
