Peng Liyuan continues to promote public health

Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, attended various activities promoting the prevention and treatment of AIDS in the Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Sichuan Province on Thursday and Friday.

At a local primary boarding school, she learned about the study routine and life of students and encouraged them to continue studying hard. Peng played with children of the Yi ethnic group at a village preschool education center and told them the importance of developing healthy habits in childhood to prevent illnesses or disease.

On Friday, Peng attended the opening ceremony of the Love in the Sun children's summer camp in Liangshan and danced with the children.

She later talked with representatives of college students who are volunteering their services in the prevention and treatment of AIDS.

Peng became the health ambassador for HIV/AIDS prevention for the Ministry of Health in January 2006 and the national ambassador for tuberculosis control and prevention in March 2007. In 2011, Peng was appointed as a WHO goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. (People’s Daily app)

US faces retaliatory tariffs worldwide amid escalating global trade spat

Countries targeted by the US to impose import tariffs have been rolling out retaliatory measures, in a sign of further escalation of trade disputes on a global scale as the administration of US President Donald Trump demonstrates no intention to back off.

Canada, which along with the EU and Mexico is subject to US tariffs, said it will, from July 1 onward, impose "dollar-for-dollar" tariffs on US imports worth some $12.8 billion -- 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. The retaliatory tariffs will also cover items such as maple syrup, whiskey and orange juice.

According to Indian media reports, beginning on August 4, India will raise higher duties on US imports of agricultural products, plus steel and aluminum. US steel and aluminum tariffs will impact some $241 million worth of India's exports, and New Delhi expects its retaliatory measures against Washington to be proportionate.

Besides the EU, Canada, Mexico, and India, the US is also in the midst of trade disputes with China, Russia, and Turkey and other regions. (Xinhua)

This is the third training exercise to be suspended in the region and White said additional military training decisions could happen if North Korea continues with its productive negotiations. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday hailed an agreement by Eurozone ministers that will put an end to the country's eight-year bailout program as a "historic" step.

Eurozone states declared the severe debt crisis, which has plagued the country since 2010, to be over. The country has since gone through three bailouts, extensive unemployment rates, and major government changes.

The agreement approved a disbursal of 15 billion euros to ease Greece’s exit from its rescue program and an extension of its loan payments by 10 years. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

The Academy of Motion Pictures Governors Committee rescinded a membership invitation given to basketball star Kobe Bryant, citing the need for “evidence of a larger career” in film animation to gain acceptance.

Under the academy's procedures, Oscar winners and nominees are automatically considered for membership, but the final decision is conducted by the board of governors. Bryant won an Oscar for his work on the animated short film “Dear Basketball.”

Bryant’s Oscar nomination and win received some controversy due to the rape charges brought against him in 2003. (Xinhua – People’s Daily app)
