China launches new BeiDou satellite

China sent a new satellite of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) into space from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province at 2:09 am Tuesday.

Launched on a Long March-3B carrier rocket, the satellite was sent to the inclined geosynchronous earth orbit. It is the 46th satellite of the BDS satellite family and the 21st satellite of the BDS-3 system.

The launch was the 307th mission for the Long March series of carrier rockets. (Xinhua) 

US imposes new, 'hard-hitting' sanctions on Iran amid tensions

US President Donald Trump announced Monday his country is imposing new and "hard-hitting" sanctions on Iran amid high tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Trump signed an executive order at the White House on Monday, slapping additional economic sanctions on Iran.

Trump told reporters that the targets of the new sanctions include Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The executive order issued by the White House, which also authorized further sanctions on those associated with the Supreme Leader's Office, will deny Iranian leadership's access to the financial resources, said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement on Monday afternoon. (Xinhua) 

Brendt Christensen found guilty of kidnapping, killing Chinese visiting scholar

Brendt Christensen, a former University of Illinois doctoral student, was found guilty Monday of kidnapping and murder.

A 12-member jury at a federal court in Peoria, Illinois unanimously ruled that Christensen was guilty of kidnapping and killing Chinese visiting scholar Zhang Yingying in 2017. (Xinhua) 

1 pilot dies, 1 survives after German fighter jets collide

A German Air Force pilot died Monday after his fighter jet collided with another during a training mission in northeastern Germany, the country’s defense minister said.

The pilot of the other Eurofighter Typhoon jet was able to eject safely and survived.

The Eurofighter Typhoon was jointly developed by Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

More than 550 of the jets have been delivered since 2003, at a cost of close to $100 million dollars apiece. (AP) 

China's first metro line under Yellow River begins trial operation

China's first metro line built under the Yellow River started trial operations on Sunday in Lanzhou, capital of Northwest China's Gansu Province.

The city is located on the upper reaches of the country's "mother river" and its second longest river, which runs 5,464 km from west to east before entering the Pacific.

The 25.9-kilometer long section in trial service is the first phase of the Lanzhou Metro Line 1, passing through four of the city's urban districts from east to west. (CGTN) 

Marbury inks CBA head coach contract

CBA team Beijing Aolong Fly Dragon announced on Monday the club had signed a contract with former NBA and CBA star Stephon Marbury to be the team’s head coach.

42-year-old Marbury had a 22-year career as a professional basketball player.

Marbury entered the NBA in 1996 as the fourth overall pick, and was an NBA All-Star with the Phoenix Suns in 2001 and 2003.

Marbury has played in the CBA since 2010.

He led the Beijing Ducks to three league titles in 2012, 2014 and 2015, and spent one year with Beijing Aolong, Beijing's other CBA team before his retirement in 2018. (Xinhua)
