Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reached in Osaka on Thursday a 10-point consensus to jointly promote the healthy development of bilateral relations, according to a senior Chinese diplomat.

The consensus was reached during a meeting between Xi and Abe ahead of a summit of the Group of 20 major economies slated for Friday and Saturday in the Japanese city of Osaka, Wu Jianghao, director-general of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry told reporters.

Among the consensus, Xi and Abe spoke highly of the sound momentum in the development of China-Japan relations and agreed that as both countries have entered a new era of development, joint efforts are needed to build bilateral relations that meet the requirements of the new era.

While the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, the two leaders saw fresh opportunities for developing bilateral relations as mutual interests and common concerns between the two countries are increasing day by day.

They also agreed to maintain close communication, strengthen high-level guidance and keep increasing political mutual trust. (Xinhua)

All eyes turn to frontrunner Joe Biden Thursday when he and nine more Democratic presidential hopefuls take the stage for a second night of debate, with immigration, health care and economic inequality commanding the candidates' attention.

They hit out on Wednesday at President Donald Trump's economic and immigration policies, but diverged on how zealously the next president should shift the country onto a more liberal course.

For Thursday's encounter, Biden and Bernie Sanders will face up-and-comers like Senator Kamala Harris, the only black woman in the race, and Pete Buttigieg, the 37-year-old gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana. (AFP)

Boeing shares.jpg

Shares of Boeing fell Thursday after US regulators identified a new issue in the Boeing 737 MAX that will likely slow the plane's return to service.

The issue, identified during simulator testing by Federal Aviation Administration, concerns a problem with a microprocessor that impedes the ability of pilots to quickly reassert control of the plane after having activated the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), according to two people familiar with the issue.

On Thursday, the International Air Transport Association, which represents 290 airlines, called on global regulators to coordinate to ensure the aircraft's safe return to service. (AFP)
